UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. --

The seventh time was a charm for the Penn State men's hockey team Friday night at Pegula Ice Arena, as Eric Scheid (Blaine, Minn.) tallied the game-winning goal on PSU's seventh power-play chance to beat Holy Cross, 3-1, in front of 6,043 fans.

"To start off, the student section was awesome," Head coach Guy Gadowsky said. "It is so amazing to come out and see such a great student section, I thought they were tremendous...Obviously I thought our power play was looking okay but the pucks just weren't going in. If we keep getting good looks, sooner or later they are going to go in."

Penn State (2-1-2) used goals from Ricky DeRosa (Aston, Pa.), Casey Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska) and Scheid to skate past Holy Cross (1-3-1). The Crusaders tied the game 7:23 into the third period, but Scheid's power-play goal five minutes later gave PSU the lead. Bailey added an insurance goal with 3:46 left in the game.

Matthew Skoff (McKees Rocks, Pa.) made 29 saves in his fifth straight start of the year. The Nittany Lions fired 40 of its 50 shots in the final two periods as opposed to HC's 16. The 50 shots attempted were a season high.

The tale of the game was Holy Cross taking 10 minor penalties resulting in eight Penn State power plays. The Crusaders were able to fight off six chances, including a pair of 5-on-3 Penn State advantages, but the seventh caught up to Holy Cross.

With just two seconds remaining on a Scott Pooley goaltender interference call, Kenny Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev.) fired a shot from the left point through traffic, off Max Gardiner's (Deephaven, Minn.) stick and Scheid put it away with 7:28 remaining in the game.

Penn State continued its pressure in a similar fashion as Patrick Koudys (Smithville, Ontario) sent a shot into traffic, the puck was tapped away from Taylor Holstrom (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Bailey made no mistake, depositing his third of the year past Matt Ginn (47 saves).

The opening goal was scored by DeRosa with 6:11 left in the second period off a set play off a faceoff win by Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alberta), which fell to David Glen (Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta). A poke check by a Crusader allowed DeRosa to swoop in and score his first goal since Feb. 14, 2014 vs. Michigan State.

PSU looked to have taken the lead in the 69 seconds of the first period when Richard made an athletic move, driving to net, switching to his backhand across the crease and leaving the puck in the net past a sprawling Ginn. Nevertheless, a lengthy replay review by the officials resulted in the goal being waved off and Richard being assessed a two-minute minor for goaltender interference.

The eight power-play chances tied the most for Penn State in the NCAA Division I era. The last time PSU had eight chances was Oct. 19, 2012 at Buffalo State (PSU went 0-for-8). The last time the Lions had seven chances were in back-to-back games last season against Robert Morris (Nov. 1, 2013) and Sacred Heart (Nov. 8), both victories.

Penn State won its first game against the Crusaders after dropping two in its first Division I season at the Hart Center. The series now stands at 1-2-0.

Penn State is now 1-0-2 on Friday nights this year.
