UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa..; Oct. 26, 2014 - The Penn State women's soccer team won its 16th Big Ten Championship and third outright title in four years, thanks to second half heroics by senior Kori Chapic on Senior Day Sunday afternoon.
The Russell, Ohio native had the first two-goal game of her career, scoring the pair five-and-a-half minutes apart to beat Iowa and capture the Conference title with a 2-1 win. Chapic and her classmates Kindrah Kohne (Homer, New York), Emily Hurd (Sammamish, Washington) and Whitney Church (Ashburn, Virginia) were honored prior to the match.
Iowa (10-4-1, 5-4-1 Big Ten) got on the board just 5:01 into the match when Corey Burns took a perfectly placed corner that sailed directly into the net for the 1-0 lead.
After the goal, the Nittany Lions (16-2-0, 11-1-0 Big Ten) were intent on roaring back. They outshot the Hawkeyes 10-1 in the final 40 minutes of the half.
The Blue and White didn't let up upon returning from halftime and were rewarded in the 53rd minute. At midfield, Salina Williford (Wayne, Pennsylvania) fed the ball to Emily Ogle (Strongsville, Ohio). Ogle sent it to Kori Chapic (Russell, Ohio), streaking down the wing. From 25 yards out, she sent a rocket that sailed over goalkeeper Hannah Clark's head to get the equalizer.
The trio of Ogle, Williford and Chapic struck again to secure the Championship five-and-a-half minutes later. On a free kick, Clark kicked the ball to midfield, directly to Ogle. Ogle chested down the ball and tapped it to Williford, who dished it to Chapic. Chapic dribbled the ball and sent the ball sailing from 20 yards out just under the crossbar for the 2-1 gamewinner. The goal was Chapic's fifth of the year, marking a career-best.
Also earning a career-best mark is Britt Eckerstrom (16-2-0), who posted her 16th win of the year. She made three saves in the victory.
Penn State's final regular season match is at Jeffrey Field on Thurs., Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. before embarking on the 2014 Big Ten Women's Soccer Tournament. The tournament is hosted by Purdue and begins Wed., Nov. 5.
