MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Behind Shannon Yoxheimer's (Jackson, Mich.) fourth career two-goal game, the Penn State women's ice hockey team topped St. Cloud State, 3-2, in Minnesota's Ridder Arena on Saturday.

Yoxheimer, a team captain, led by example with a pair of unanswered goals en route to the 3-2 win. Minnetonka, Minn., native Amy Petersen also scored for the Nittany Lions.

The Nittany Lions (1-1-0) and Huskies (0-2-0) traded power plays in the first period but both teams were unable to exploit on the man advantage.

At 16:46 in the opening frame, however, Penn State scored its first goal of the season, thanks to Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minn.), for the 1-0 lead.

Just under a minute and a half later, St. Cloud State made good on its second power play of the game. Hannnah Hoenshell (Plano, Texas) was sent to the box for tripping at 16:58 and Molly Illikainen tied the game at 1-1.

The second period began with an offensive flurry by both teams, as St. Cloud State registered 10 shots to Penn State's seven. The Huskies benefitted from the flurry, as Payge Pena scored 10 minutes into the second for the 2-1 lead.

But at 11:55, the Blue and White fired back. St. Cloud State's Kalli Funk was called for tripping and a minute into the man advantage, Yoxheimer knotted the score at 2-2.

In the third, Yoxheimer's stick continued to burn and at 6:27, she scored her second goal of the game thanks to an assist from Hannah Bramm, giving Penn State a 3-2 lead. It marked the fourth two-goal game of Yoxheimer's career.

After Penn State scored the eventual game-winner, St. Cloud State fired 16 shots before Illikainen was handed a five-minute major and 10-minute game misconduct with 24 seconds left in regulation. Another Husky penalty was issued, giving Penn State a two-man advantage to end the game.

The Nittany Lions recorded 24 shots during the game, led by Yoxheimer's five and Sarah Nielsen's (Edina, Minn.) four.

In her first collegiate appearance, Hannah Ehresmann (Minnetonka, Minn.) made 29 saves for the win.

The Nittany Lions open their 2014-15 home slate in Pegula Ice Area on Sat., Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. against Quinnipiac.
