ANN ARBOR, Mich. --
The Nittany Lion men's hockey team went for its first Big Ten sweep, but fell 8-1 at Yost Ice Arena to Michigan on Saturday night. Taylor Holstrom (Yorba Linda, Calif.) tallied his fourth of the year and Casey Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska) stretched his point streak to four games on an assist.
Michigan (5-6-0, 1-1-0-0 Big Ten) scored three in the second period and five in the third to earn the series split. Penn State (7-3-2, 1-1-0-0 Big Ten) suffered its largest margin of defeat in its Division I tenure.
Penn State had the best scoring chances in a scoreless period highlighted by two Jonathan Milley (Gatineau, Quebec) rockets that dinged off the crossbar. Michigan out-shot Penn State, 12-9, over the opening 20 minutes.
The second period was played at a furious pace with 38 shots fired by the two teams. PSU thought it had a 1-0 lead on a Scott Conway (Basingstoke, England) wrap around attempt, but after a review the puck was ruled not to have crossed the line and the game remained scoreless.
Michigan (5-6-0, 1-1-0-0 Big Ten) would jump ahead on a Boo Nieves tally with 17:56 remaining in the period assisted by JT Compher and Max Shuart. The Wolverines would double the lead on a Tyler Motte tally midway through the frame before going on a 5-on-3 power play.
Despite killing off the two-man advantage, Michigan's Zach Hyman marker made it 3-0 with 3:16 left.
The Nittany Lions showed signs of life when Holstrom cut the lead to a pair right before the second-period horn. Bailey and Juha earned assists on the play.
PSU would concede its first short-handed goal of the year as Andrew Copp scored six minutes into the third period for the 4-1 lead.
The Wolverines dominated the rest of the way with JT Compher scoring at 11:32 and 15:54, while Alex Kile added a tally at 13:37. The scoring was capped by Michael Downing's third of the year with 3:15 remaining in the game.
Saturday night represented the first time all season Penn State failed to score more than a single goal, snapping a streak of 11 games to start the year.
The Nittany Lions were able to capitalize just once on eight Michigan penalties. A bright spot for Penn State is that it kept Michigan scoreless on its power play for a second straight night, turning away all five opportunities. The Nittany Lions were 9-for-9 on the penalty kill for the weekend.
Michigan held a 45-42 advantage in shots with Zach Nagelvoort making 41 saves for his third victory of the year.
