HAMILTON, N.Y. - An offensive outburst in the second period by Penn State hurtled the Nittany Lions to a 6-4 win over Colgate on Friday.
Hannah Hoenshell's (Plano, Texas) three-point night included her first two goals of the season, while Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minnesota) had a two-goal game of her own.
The Raiders (2-6-0) scored the game's opening goal four minutes in. Annika Zalewski whipped around in front of the net and slid it past Celine Whitlinger (Garden Grove, California) for the 1-0 score.
However, seven minutes later, Penn State (4-4-3) was able to display one of the most dominant aspects of its game as of late: its powerplay. Shannon Yoxheimer (Jackson, Mich.) fed a pass from the nearside boards to Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minnesota), who took a shot from the post and cashed in on her own rebound for the 1-1 game-tying goal. The powerplay goal was Penn State's fourth in three games.
Penn State's offense started to fire on all cylinders a little over nine minutes in to the second period. Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minnesota) drove the puck down the boards and cut to the front of the net, dishing the puck to Hoenshell at the farside post. She slipped it past the out-of-position goalie for her first tally of the year and the 2-1 lead.
Just 29 seconds later, Penn State built on its lead. At the faceoff dot, Petersen pressured a Colgate player, leading to a turnover and sending the Nittany Lions' most dangerous offensive threat on a breakaway. She deked the goalie and pushed it around her for the 3-1 score.
The Raiders cut the Nittany Lions' lead to one 1:38 later. But Penn State responded in kind 66 seconds after the tally to snatch back the two-goal advantage. Jordin Pardoski sent a slapshot to the net and during the ensuing scramble, Bowman tipped in the 4-2 count.
A true beauty by the Nittany Lions capped scoring in the frame. Yoxheimer got the puck in her own zone, skated through center ice, beat out three Raiders and reached out to push the past the goalie's blocker for the 5-2 lead.
Penn State's four-goal stanza tied for the second-most goals scored in a single period (scored five goals in the first period of a 10-0 win over Chatham on Jan. 4, 2013).
Colgate refused to go down without a fight, adding a pair of markers with 2:23 left in the second and 2:27 in to the third to make the score 5-4.
But it was the Nittany Lions who got the final goal of the game thanks to another breakaway, encapsulating Penn State's offensive outing. Petersen secured the puck off of a Colgate turnover in the neutral zone and flipped it to Hoenshell. She then skated in alone on the goalie and put the puck top shelf glove side for the final 6-4 score.
Whitlinger (3-3-0) picked up her third win of the season in the 32-save outing.
Penn State and Colgate face off again tomorrow, Nov. 8, for a 4 p.m. matchup.
