Nittany Lions Strong in Singles on Second Day at William & Mary Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team had a strong day in the singles flight at the William & Mary Invitational, with six Nittany Lions picking up wins. The tournament concludes on Sunday with Penn State competing against Old Dominion in both singles and doubles flights.

The Nittany Lions took on William & Mary in the singles flight on Saturday and Old Dominion and Harvard in the doubles flights.

Junior Roman Trkulja (Toronto, Canada) earned a straight-set win at No. 2, 6-4, 6-0, against Addison Appleby, while sophomore Aws Laaribi (Rye, N.Y.) swept Lars de Boer, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot. Both Nittany Lions are 2-0 this weekend.

Penn State also earned wins at the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth singles positions. Sophomore Nika Dolidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) knocked off Will Juggins, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4, and senior Tomas Hanzlik (Prague, Czech Republic) defeated Damon Niquet, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5.

Sophomore Marc Collado Castells (Barcelona, Spain) knocked off Scott Huang in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Senior Michael Reilly (Raleigh, N.C.) earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 8 against Luqman Ebrahim.

At the top singles spot, junior Leonard Stakhovsky (Kiev, Ukraine), ranked 29th in the ITA Poll, dropped a 6-3, 6-4, decision against Christian Cargill. Sophomore Christian Lutschaunig (Richboro, Pa.) fell in a tight three-set match, 6-7(3), 6-3, 10-7, against Alec Miller.

Reilly and Stakhovsky combined in doubles to split a pair of matches at No. 1 doubles. The duo knocked off Harvard's Alex Steinroeder and Kenny Tao, 8-7. Against Old Dominion's Adam Moundir and Michael Weindl, the Nittany Lion pair dropped an 8-6 result.

Lutschaunig teamed up with Dolidze, at No. 3, in an 8-5 victory against Old Dominion's Javier Jover Maestre and Zvonimir Podvinski. Against Harvard's Conor Haughey and Jean Thirouin, Lutschaunig combined with Collado Castells, but fell 8-5, also at No. 3.

At the second doubles spot, Laaribi and Trkulja dropped a tight, 8-7, match against Harvard's Shaun Chaudhuri and Grant Solomon. The Nittany Lion duo fell, 8-5, against Old Dominion's Carlos Lopez Villa and Theophile Lanthiez.
