UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (AP) - The sparkle and flair returned to the historic Recreation Building on Saturday (Jan. 10) afternoon as the No. 16 Penn State women's gymnastics program opened its season with a quad-meet victory over Cornell, New Hampshire and Rutgers.

With a team score of 194.675, Penn State (3-0) topped the field, posting the sixth highest season opening score in school history. New Hampshire finished second with a tally of 193.450, Rutgers was third at 191.825 and Cornell rounded out the field at 186.725.

The Nittany Lions had solid showings on three of the four events and claimed individual event titles on all four apparatus. Their team scores on the vault (48.900), uneven bars (49.000) and floor exercise (48.800) were the top scores among the competing teams.

Freshman Briannah Tsang (Vancouver, British Columbia) claimed the all-around competition with a score of 39.225; winning two events and placing third in two others. Tsang topped the charts on the vault (9.850) and tied for the title on the balance beam (9.800). Her score of 9.800 on the vault was third, while her 9.775 on the floor exercise tied for third.

The No. 2 all-arounder also came from Penn State, as senior Krystal Welsh (Bowie, Md.) completed the four-event competition with a mark of 39.100. She tied for the event crown on the balance beam (9.800) and finished second on the uneven bars (9.825). She also placed among the top five on the floor exercise with a score of 9.750.

Rookie Lauren Li (Plano, Texas) placed third overall in the all-around to give Penn State a clean sweep of the podium. Li tied for the event title on the floor exercise (9.800), placed fourth on the uneven bars (9.775) and finished sixth on the vault (9.750).

Penn State followed the standard home rotation, staring on the vault, and posted four of the top six scores of the meet on the event. Tsang, Sidney Sanabria-Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) and Welsh closed out the rotation with three straight scores of 9.800 or better.

The uneven bars culminated with the top six scores coming from Penn State competitors. Sanabria-Robles topped the charts with a score of 9.850, followed by Welsh, Tsang and Li. Alex Witt (Odessa, Fla.) finished fifth, while Ann Carr Award winner Lexi Carroll (Olney, Md.) placed sixth. Carroll hit on all three of her routines to earn the award for most inspirational performance.

The third rotation took the Nittany Lions to the balance beam, where Tsang and Welsh topped the standings, before they closed out the meet with a solid floor exercise performance. Li won the event, with Carroll and Tsang tying for third, followed by Welsh and Sanabria-Robles in fifth and sixth, respectively.

The Nittany Lions hit the road next weekend when they travel to Lincoln, Neb. to square off with No. 9 Nebraska on Saturday, Jan. 17. The meet will begin at 4 p.m. and be shown live on the Big Ten Network. They return home to face Maryland on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 4 p.m., the meet will be a double-dual meet with the men's program facing Michigan.
