UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Postseason honors have begun to roll in for senior standout guard D.J. Newbill. He earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors Monday, while the U.S. Basketball Writers Association named him to the All-District II team Tuesday.
The USBWA honor is a first for Penn State player since Talor Battle in 2011. Newbill also was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection last season, following up on a honorable mention nod as a sophomore in 2012-13. A Penn State player has been named to the first, second or third-team all-conference teams a total of 34 times.
Newbill's numbers this season have been nothing short of remarkable. He has led the power-packed Big Ten in scoring since the opening tip of the season, finishing the regular season with 20.7 points per game, a mark which leads all players from Power 5 conferences and is ranked seventh overall in Division I.
Newbill has racked up a total of 641 points this season, good for sixth on the Penn State single-season scoring charts. He is the fourth-ranked scorer in PSU history, after just three seasons, producing 1,749 points. Including his freshman season at Southern Mississippi, the Philadelphia product us one of 11 current Division I players to pass the 2,000-point scoring mark (2,042).
After notching the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer at Minnesota Sunday, Newbill finished with 31 points and his third 30-plus point outing of the season. He has topped 20 points 16 times and has led the team or tied for the lead in scoring in 27 of 31 games.
Newbill and the 13th-seeded Nittany Lions (16-15, 4-14) begin play in the Big Ten Tournament at 4:30 p.m. ET Wednesday against No. 12 seed Nebraska (13-17, 5-13) on ESPN2. They enter the tourney with the most regular-season wins and above the .500 mark for the first time since 2011.
