LAST TIME OUT: No. 9 Penn State 17, Vanderbilt 10
The No. 9 Nittany Lion women's lacrosse team used superb goalkeeping and steady scoring to down former ALC rival Vanderbilt, 17-10, on a cold and windy Sunday at Penn State Lacrosse Field. Junior Emi Smith (Denver, Colo.) made a season-high 15 saves, while Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) and Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.) combined for 11 points.

Smith made 15 stops, nine of which came in the second half when Penn State (5-2) was able to pull away from Vanderbilt (3-4). Smith's play limited the Commodores to just 1-of-5 shooting from the free-position. The outing was one of Smith's career-high of 16 saves, set last season at Virginia.

On the other end of the field, McCormick and Mosketti sparked the Nittany Lion offense, tallying a combined five goals and six assists. McCormick had a six-point game with two tallies and four helpers, while Mosketti notched a hat trick and dished two dimes of her own.

In all, Penn State had nine different goal scorers and seven of them tallied two or more goals. Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.), Kelly Lechner (Silver Spring, Md.), Jess Loizeaux (Mullica Hills, N.J.), Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) and Kristin Brent (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) each tallied two goals to aid McCormick and Mosketti.

Haley Ford (White Hall, Md.) and Tatum Coffey (Toms River, N.J.) contributed to the potent attack with two-point games, both with a goal and an assist.

MCCORMICK RISING UP THE CHARTS
Maggie McCormick is on pace to set a Penn State career record for assists, currently holding the second spot with 112 dishes. McCormick is three helpers away from matching Julie Tice (115, 1997-2000).

For her career, McCormick has 223 points behind 111 goals and 112 assists. The 223 points are good for fifth place at Penn State, nine behind fourth (234, Beth Thompson, 1983-86). McCormick (111 goals) needs nine goals to crack the top 15 goals chart.

LAZO LEADING THE LIONS
Despite missing the past two games with injury, Penn State sophomore Steph Lazo is the team's leader in goals early on with 14. She had a five-goal game against Lehigh and a hat trick against Bucknell before scoring two vs. Duquesne. She found the back of the net once more against Virginia two weeks ago and had another hat trick vs. Loyola last week.

In all, Lazo has 15 points on the season, third to Maggie McCormick (28, 11-18) and Kelly Lechner (16, 13-3). Entering 2015, Lazo had only one goal to her name.

BALANCED SCORING
The Nittany Lions have received goals from 14different sources this season with six different double-digit scorers in all. Steph Lazo (14) leads the bunch followed by Kelly Lechner (13), Jenna Mosketti (12), Tatum Coffey (11), Maggie McCormick (11) and Madison Cyr (11).

CYR, MCCORMICK NAMED TO TEWAARATON AWARD WATCH LIST
Senior Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) and junior Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) were named as two of 50 women's lacrosse players to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List on Thursday night, Feb. 26. The Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour, honors the best men's and women's collegiate lacrosse player.

This is the fifth straight season the Nittany Lions have had a representative on the preseason watch list. Potential additions to the watch list will be announced March 19 and April 9 before the first cutdown to 25 players on April 23.

ABOUT THE TIGERS
Princeton (4-1, 1-0 Ivy League) opens a four-game home stand with Penn State following its first loss of the season, 18-11, at No. 8 Virginia. Previously, the Tigers had defeated Loyola (10-8), Drexel (8-4), Georgetown (11-7) and Dartmouth (8-5).

Princeton averages 9.60 goals per game, scoring on 35.8 percent of its shots, while allowing just 8.40 goals per game on 34.7 percent shooting. Its strong defense is anchored by goalkeeper Ellie DeGarmo, who is 4-1 with a 8.15 GAA and .533 save percentage.

The scoring charge is Olivia Hompe with her 12 goals and 17 points followed by Erin Slifer with eight goals and 13 points and Erin McMunn's six goals, 13 points. A fourth Tiger, Stephanie Paloscio, has 10 points on six goals, four assists.

THE PENN STATE-PRINCETON SERIES
The most played opponent in Penn State women's lacrosse history, Princeton holds a 23-13 record in the series that will see its 37th edition on Wednesday. Last season, Penn State broke a five-game skid against the Tigers with a 13-12 win at home on Senior Day, before falling 16-13 two weeks later in the NCAA Tournament to Princeton.

THIS IS B1G
Penn State is one of six members in the inaugural season for Big Ten women's lacrosse. The Nittany Lions join storied programs such as Maryland and its 12 NCAA titles and Northwestern with its seven championships. When PSU's two NCAA crowns are factored in, the Big Ten is the winningest conference in women's lacrosse.

Joining PSU, Maryland and Northwestern are Ohio State, Rutgers and Michigan in the Big Ten fold. Each team will play the other five members of the conference once. The 2015 Big Ten Tournament is set for April 30-May 3 at Rutgers with all six teams participating.

NEXT TIME OUT
Penn State travels on Sunday to Drexel for a 4 p.m. contest. The Nittany Lions lead the series, 4-0, following its 21-8 win last season in Happy Valley.
