COLUMBUS, Oh. - Freshman Andrew Mackiewicz (Westwood, Mass.) became the 2015 Men's Saber National Champion this afternoon as the second day of NCAA Championships conclude. This marks a back-to-back win for Penn State in the individual competition for men's saber. Penn State saw great success across the board as the men wrapped up their competition. The women begin competition tomorrow, March 21st.
Mackiewicz, a freshman in the competition, was ecstatic to bring the title back home to Penn State.
"Coming in as a freshman, I was nervous, but super excited. I was ready to give it everything I've got. At the end of the day, it came down to who wanted the title most and I believe at heart that I wanted it the most today," said Mackiewicz.
Junior Nobuo Bravo (San Francisco, Calif.) also went on to the finals in his event of men's foil but fell short, bring home second place for the Nittany Lions.
As a team, Penn State remains in third, still in a tight battle with Columbia and Ohio State University.
Individual results are as followed:
Junior Kaito Streets and previous men's saber champion finished 6th. In men's epee, freshman Conor Shepard (Colleyville, Texas) finished 15h while sophomore Oskar Tang (Stockholm, Sweden) finished in 19th. In men's foil, senior David Gomez-Tanamachi (Mexico City, Mexico) closed out his career in 13th.
