FINAL STATISTICS

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Greg Guers (Langhorne, Pa.) hit his fourth home run of the season and Aaron Novak (Ambler, Pa.) extended his hitting streak to 10, but it was not enough as Michigan defeated Penn State, 5-3, in Big Ten baseball action Saturday afternoon in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Michigan (20-14, 4-6 Big Ten) received a strong start on the mound from RHP Ryan Nutof (3-3), who allowed one run on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts. He only yielded hits in the second and sixth innings, as Penn State's (10-19, 2-5 Big Ten) lone early run came on four consecutive hits in the second.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second and following a double from left fielder James Coates (Girard, Ohio), third baseman Ryky Smith (York, Pa.) slapped a hit through the right side to drive in Coates and pull the Nittany Lions within one, 2-1. However, it was as close as the Nittany Lions would come.

The Wolverines got on the scoreboard in the top of the second on a two-RBI single with the bases loaded from catcher Kendall Patrick. Designated hitter Kyle Jusick, one of four U-M, players to post a two-hit game, drove in a run in the third inning for a 3-1 lead, and then back-to-back sacrifice flies in the sixth from third baseman Travis Maezes and first baseman Carmen Benedetti pushed Michigan's lead to 5-1.

Guers hit a home run into the right field bleachers with pinch hitter Nick Riotto (Washington, Pa.) on base and one out in the bottom of the ninth, but RHP Bryan Pall was able to get the final two outs to end the game.

LHP Taylor Lehman (1-3) pitched into the sixth inning for Penn State, allowing all five runs on nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Eight different Lion batters recorded a hit, but U-M outhit PSU, 11-8. Both teams walked five batters each, but the Lions plunked three Wolverines. Michigan stranded 12 runners on base, while Penn State left 10 on. A season-high 1,254 fans attended the game.

Michigan and Penn State will play the rubber match Sunday starting at 1 p.m. on Medlar Field.
