FINAL STATISTICS

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - LHP Brett Adcock limited Penn State to two hits in six innings and Travis Maezes went 3-for-4 with four RBIs as Michigan defeated the Nittany Lions, 8-3, in Big Ten baseball action Sunday afternoon in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The game was tied 2-2 until the top of the sixth inning when first baseman Carmen Benedetti drove in the go-ahead run for Michigan (21-14, 6-6 Big Ten) with an RBI-single. The Wolverines then put the game out of reach with five runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

First baseman Christian Helsel (Altoona, Pa.) led Penn State (10-20, 2-6 Big Ten) offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI-double in the eighth inning. Helsel drove in right fielder Aaron Novak (Ambler, Pa.) on the play, as Novak had extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single to center earlier in the frame.

Four of the Lions' six hits on the day came in the final three innings, as Adcock (4-3) yielded two unearned runs on two hits and three walks in the first six.

Half of Michigan's 10 hits went for extra bases, and early extra base hits resulted led to U-M's first three runs. Maezes doubled twice.

Left fielder Cody Bruder doubled down the left field line to leadoff the second inning and, following a sacrifice bunt, scored on a double play for Michigan's first run. The Wolverines took a 2-0 lead in the third after centerfielder Jackson Glines tripled with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Maezes.

Penn State battled back in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. Designated hitter James Coates (Girard, Ohio) scored from second base in the third on a ball mishandled by the second baseman on an infield single by left fielder Greg Guers. In the fourth, Helsel singled to left field, stole second and advanced to third when the throw went into centerfield, and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

That would be the last hit Adcock would allow though.

Michigan regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning and broke the game open in the seventh inning on an RBI-double by Maezes and an error with the bases loaded that allowed two runs to score for a 6-2 lead. Two more runs scored in the eighth on a comebacker hit by Maezes off RHP Jack Anderson that found its way to the back of the infield for a double.

RHP Nick Distasio (1-4) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk.

Another season-high crowd was in attendance, totaling 1,273.

Penn State will have Monday off before traveling to Morgantown to take on West Virginia Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. The Nittany Lions will then host Bucknell Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
