UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Penn State women's tennis team tallied their fifth consecutive victory after their 7-0 win over St. Bonaventure Saturday. This was the first 7-0 sweep for the Nittany Lions since January 19, 2014 over Navy. This was also the first time the blue and white did not lose a set since February 10, 2013 against Old Dominion.
Sophomore Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.) clinched the victory for the Nittany Lions with her 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mariam Skhirtladze. Victoria Kisialeva (Montreal, Canada) cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Fatya Amiri.
Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) won her fifth match in six tries after her 6-3, 6-4 win over Mara Martinez-Santori. Dasha Sapogova (Minsk, Belarus) defeated Marisa Brossard in straight sets for her fourth straight victory. Freshman Kelly Mengel (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won her first spring match 6-0, 6-0 over Lauren Doversola. Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) wrapped up the afternoon for the blue and white with her 6-1, 6-4 victory over Dominique Mortier.
"I felt like our team played a solid match and stayed focused throughout the day," said head coach Chris Cagle. "We will have a good week of practice and then hit the road to take on Nebraska and Iowa. I look forward to us competing hard again next weekend."
The Nittany Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning the first two doubles matches. Zuhse and Whiteaway cruised to an 8-0 victory over Fatya Amiri and Dominique Mortier. Kisialeva and Sapogova paired back together to clinch the doubles point with their 8-4 victory over Marisa Brossard and Mara Martinez-Santori.
The blue and white are back in action Friday, April 10 as the Nittany Lions travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the Cornhuskers for a 5:30 p.m. match. Penn State will stay on the road Sunday when the blue and white battle Iowa at noon.
