FINAL STATISTICS

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State scored three runs with two outs in the seventh inning to spoil a career-best start for RHP Dakota Forsyth and defeat Penn State, 3-1, in Big Ten baseball action Sunday afternoon in McLane Baseball Stadium.

LHP Jeff Kinley (4-2) was stellar on the mound as well for Michigan State (31-19, 13-8 B1G), allowing just one run on three hits and two walks in seven innings of work with five strikeouts. LHP Joe Mockbee (2) earned the save, allowing just a double to right fielder Aaron Novak (Ambler, Pa.) and keeping Penn State (18-28, 6-14 B1G) scoreless over the final two innings.

Forsyth (1-2) cruised through the first six innings, facing the minimum in all but the fifth inning when he faced four batters. However, with one on first and one out in the seventh, the Nittany Lions failed to turn a routine, inning-ending double play, allowing the first runner to second base all day. Forsyth walked the next batter, and then right fielder Brandon Hughes singled to right field to drive in the game-tying run. Hughes moved into scoring position on the throw-in, and catcher Chad Roskelly followed with a single up the middle to drive in the two go-ahead runs.

Forsyth was relieved by RHP Sal Biasi after working a career-high 6 2/3 innings. He allowed the three runs on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Penn State had led 1-0 since the third inning. Designated hitter James Coates (Girard, Ohio) doubled and scored on a single by left fielder Greg Guers (Langhorne, Pa.) for the lone Lion run.

Spartans Hughes and first baseman Ryan Krill had the game's lone two-hit games. PSU catcher Alex Malinsky (Apex, N.C.) reached twice on a walk and hit-by-pitch, and caught two Spartans stealing. Guers also walked to reach twice.

Penn State will next play a three-game series at Purdue starting Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
