DURHAM, N.C. - The Penn State men's golf team sits in third place after 36 holes on the first day of the Rod Myers Invitational on the Duke University Golf Course. The Nittany Lions were atop the 14-team standings after round one before finishing 1-over par on the day.
Charles Huntzinger leads the five PSU golfers by sitting in 10th-place with finishes of even and 1-under par, respectively. The freshman from Duluth, Georgia, birdied three of his last five holes on the opening day of his first collegiate tournament.
Geoff Vartelas, a senior captain from Cromwell, Connecticut, sits in a tie for 14th place after tallying a 71 and 73.
Fellow senior captain JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) sits in a tie for 32nd place, an improvement of nearly 30 spots from his first-round performance. After carding a 79, Dornes powered through with a 3-under par showing in the second round, producing the fourth-best outing (69) among all 75 golfers in the round.
Sophomore Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) and freshman Ryan Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) share the No. 37 position at 5-over on the day. The younger Dornes tallied a 70 in the first round to produce a strong 2-under showing in his first collegiate tourney round.
Wake Forest leads the tournament after day one, following an 8-stroke improvement between rounds. Duke is in second with the Nittany Lions owning third and East Carolina and Loyola (Md.) rounding out the Top 5.
The tournament will conclude Sunday with 18 holes. Penn State golfers begin teeing off at 9:10 a.m. with the last one beginning action at 9:46 a.m.
