UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Forward Eric Scheid (Blaine, Minn.) scored on the first two shots of the game as the 19th-ranked Penn State men's hockey team swept Michigan State, 6-1, at Pegula Ice Arena in front of 6,178 fans. Junior goaltender Eamon McAdam (Perkasie, Pa.) made 28 stops to aid the Nittany Lions who hosted their third annual Teddy Bear Toss benefiting THON families.
"Teddy bear night went great, I heard it was awesome," said head coach Guy Gadowsky. "It was great to have (Penn State men's hockey THON child) Colton Buckley here. Every time Colton is here our guys get all pumped up. And (I'm) just proud that (today) was sort of a similar situation: we had a four-goal lead going into the third last night and we sort of got it taken to us and tonight I thought we played our game in the third so it was good to see that we learned something."
A total team effort, Penn State (10-2-3, 2-0-0-0 Big Ten) saw every member of the team record a positive rating with 12 different Nittany Lions recording a point and five scoring a goal. Michigan State (4-8-2, 0-2-0-0 Big Ten) saw its winless streak reach seven games (0-6-1).
Penn State made sure there was no carry over of the letdown from last night as Scheid scored 60 seconds apart in the first four minutes. Scheid's hard work along with Dylan Richard's (Sherwood Park, Alberta) forechecking allowed the speedy senior to zoom around the goal with the puck and fire one past freshman Ed Minney from the right faceoff circle.
Exactly one minute later, Scheid and Richard linked up again on the forecheck with Erik Autio (Espoo, Finland) supplying the entry pass as Scheid put one in off the back of Minney's left leg from behind the net for the two-goal lead after only 3:50 of game time. The back-to-back goals by Scheid are the fastest in program history.
The Nittany Lions continued to press and broke through for a third period with terrific passing from one end of the ice to the other. At the end of the play was Ricky DeRosa (Aston, Pa.) who put away a Tommy Olczyk (Long Grove, Ill.) feed from the left wing with 2:25 remaining in the first period.
Kevin Kerr (Bensalem, Pa.) started the play in his defensive zone, skated around an MSU forward and found DeRosa in the middle of the ice. He continued the play by sending a pass to the right dashers where Zach Saar (Richland, Mich.) made a stretch pass to a striding Olczyk.
Michigan State elected to relieve Ed Minney (seven saves) after his first collegiate start in favor of reigning Big Ten Player of the Year Jake Hildebrand, who lasted 40 minutes on Friday night after giving up four goals.
Despite the 3-0 lead, the Nittany Lions had 1:25 remaining of a Michigan State power play to kill, but Zach Osburn prevented Penn State from earning its 17th consecutive kill. His shot from the left point only 55 seconds into the period made it a two-goal game.
The Nittany Lions re-established its three-goal cushion as David Glen (Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta) took advantage of an MSU miscue behind the net for a 4-1 lead with 12:13 remaining in the period. John Drager went to cycle the puck back to a fellow Spartan but Alec Marsh's (Bridgewater, N.J.) check allowed Glen to scoop the puck and score the wraparound goal.
Senior Kenny Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev.) made the score 5-1 when he poked home his fifth goal of the season with 5:12 left in the frame. Mike Williamson (Leduc, Alberta) uncorked a shot from the left point that caromed off the endboards as Curtis Loik (North Vancouver, British Columbia) attempted to stuff it home on the right post. The puck bounced high and Brooks was there to help it home.
In the third period, Penn State controlled the pace of play as each team had several power play opportunities. Penn State finally scored on the power play when Vince Pedrie (Rochester, Minn.) rifled one home from the right point during a two-man advantage with 3:21 to play. Pedrie's goal was set up by Autio who picked up his second assist of the game. Pedrie scored in back-to-back games for the first time.
The Nittany Lions were 1-for-4 in the third period for a game total of 1-for-5, while Michigan State was 1-for-3 overall and 0-for-2 in the third on the power play. The Nittany Lions held edges in shots (46-29) and faceoffs (43-38).
