UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Junior Chris Nugent has earned AVCA Sports Imports DI-II National Player of the Week honors, as announced by the organization this afternoon. The honor is the first of Nugent's career and the 16th time a Nittany Lion has been selected for the weekly award.
The honor comes just a day after he picked up his first EIVA Offensive Player of the Week award this season.
Nugent helped guide Penn State to a 2-0 record with non-conference wins against #14 Ball State and IPFW. In the 3-0 victory against Ball State, Chris recorded 11 kills on a .600 attacking percentage which included one service ace. In the Nittany Lions' three-set win over IPFW, Nugent finished with 17 kills and hit .500 with one service ace.
Having recorded double digit kills in every match this season, Nugent leads the team with 4.14 kills per set, which ranks first in the conference and 10th nationally.
Nugent is the first Nittany Lion to earn the award since Aaron Russell was tabbed AVCA Player of the Week in 2015.
No. 9 Penn State men's volleyball (4-2, 0-0) is set to travel to face Saint Francis (3-3, 0-0) Friday, January 29 at 7 p.m. in Loretto, Pa.
