Women's Tennis Falls to Purdue

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa -- The Penn State women's tennis team (8-12, 4-6) fell in todays conference match against No. 70 Purdue (12-11, 5-5) 5-2. Next, the Nittany Lions will travel to Bloomington, Ind. to take on Indiana (14-9, 4-5) in their last Big Ten conference match of the season on Sunday, April 14 at 10 a.m.

"Purdue came out on top today but overall I was proud of how we competed up and down the lineup in singles," said head coach Chris Cagle, "We had our chances but it just did not quite go our way. We will get ready for Indiana on Sunday."

In singles play, the Nittany Lions mixed up their lineup against the Boilermakers. Sophomores Kelly Mengel (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Liyin Xu (Chengdu, China) stepped in to compete but fell at No. 5 and No. 6. Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.) made an appearance at No. 2 for the first time of the spring season and defeated Krisztina Kapitany 6-3, 6-1. Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) fell at No. 3, 7-5, 6-4 and Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) was defeated in a tight three set match at No. 4, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6. Senior, Kim Surin (Montreal, Canada) advanced over Nicole Robinson at No. 1, 1-6, 7-6, 6-1

Purdue secured the doubles point over Penn State. Duo Xu and Mengel were swept by Purdue partners Escribens and Davila, 6-0. Surin and McCluskey were defeated at No. 1, 6-2 and partners Whiteaway and Zuhse went unfinished at No. 2.
