SPRINGFIELD, Pa. -- Rising sophomore Jackie Rogowicz came up with the big shot when she needed it to advance into a playoff with a second round 75 at the U.S. Women's Amateur on Tuesday at the Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pennsylvania.
Rogowicz finished T-60 after an overall 147 in the opening rounds of play to advance into a 9-for-5 playoff scenario with nine players vying for just five spots in the match-play round.
The first playoff hole was the par-3, 186-yard tenth were a bogey kept the sophomore from moving on, however, only four players parred the hole to advance. Due to darkness the remaining five players couldn't begin the second playoff hole until 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
With only one spot left the five-some took on the par-4 11th, however, with Rogowicz and three others securing par, Muni He sunk a 22-foot birdie putt to move on into the match-play portion of the championship.
Beginning her second-round Tuesday afternoon on the back-side, Rogowicz was inconsistent in as she started with five straight pars before a double-bogey six on the par four 15th. She bounced back nicely with a birdie on the following hole and closed the back-nine with a one-over 36.
The sophomore then opened the front side with a par, but quickly fell outside the cut-line with four consecutive bogies before a crucial deuce at the par three sixth. She backed that up with three straight pars to close out her round and advance into the playoff.
Coming off an opening round 75 and hovering around the cut-line, Maddy Herr tee'd off Tuesday morning after participating in the afternoon on Monday, but was unable to find her rhythm early opening bogey, double-bogey, bogey before playing the next eight holes one-under with a birdie on the par-5 seventh.
However, a decisive triple-bogey on 12 derailed her round as she finished with a seven over 78 for a two round score of 153 finishing T-112.
The top 64 golfers will advance to the match-play portion of this championship which begins Wednesday morning and runs through Sunday. A total of 156 golfers were participating this week at the 6,259-yard, par 71 course in suburban Philadelphia.
