Penn State Wraps Up Matches At Midland Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; September 18, 2016 ââ'¬" The Penn State women's tennis team continued its competition in Midland, Tx. on Saturday, wrapping up its final matches today. This was the opening tournament of the fall season.

The results from Saturday, Sep. 17 are as follows: Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Az.) fell to her opponent Katelyn Jackson of Texas Tech 6-1, 6-1. Dasha Sapogova (Belarus, Minsk) won against Talisa Merchiers of Lamar 6-0, 7-6(5). Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) lost to Shannon Hanley of Penn State 6-3, 7-6(5) and won against Milou Pietersz of University of Texas-El Paso 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(5).

Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) dominated her singles matches defeating Catherine Ragon of University of Alabama Birmingham 4-6, 7-6(5), 1-0(8) and teammate Samantha Smith of Penn State 6-3, 7-6(5). Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.) fell to Jeannie Lozowski of Nebraska 6-3, 6-2. Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) lost to Montana Moore of Tyler Junior College 6-4, 6-4 in singles. She advanced in doubles with Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.).

Zuhse and Dunn were victorious in their doubles match against Spengler and Lapayeva of Lamar 8-5. Their doubles match vs Federici and Pou of Texas Tech 1-2 resumed this morning. Zuhse and Dunn fell to Texas Tech 8-5. Hanley defeated Montana Moore of Tyler Junior College 6-2, 6-3. The consolation final with Hanley went uncontested.

"I felt like the level of play was high today," said head coach Chris Cagle. "We will now take the experiences of this weekend and train to get ready for our next tournament in Philadelphia in a few weeks.

The team will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. on Fri., Sep. 30 for the Penn Invitational.
