Women's Tennis Wraps Up Day Two Of Regionals

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; October 15, 2016 -- The second day of the ITA Regionals wrapped up Saturday as Penn State competed all day.

Seven Nittany Lions competed in singles. Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.) fell to Blakely of Pitt in three sets 7-6, 3-6, 7-5. Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Florida) fell to her opponent Shakhnazarova of Towson in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Dasha Sapogova (Belarus, Minsk), fell to Johanson of UVA in two sets 6-2, 6-1. Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia), beat Washington of Pitt in two sets 6-1, 6-4. Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) dominated her singles match beating Aubets of VCU in three sets 7-6, 2-6, 6-2. Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) defeated Rachel Nelson of James Madison 6-1, 6-1. Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Florida) beat Dylan Owens of James Madison 6-2, 6-4.

"Overall we competed well today," said head coach Chris Cagle. "The day started with Katia and Devan playing well in doubles. The singles matches were very close today and tomorrow we have five playing singles matches with Sammi and Katia in the main draw. I look forward to tomorrow being our best day of the tournament."

Devan McCluskey and Katia Blik competed in doubles for the Nittany Lions. They lost their doubles match to Rasmussen/Brau of VCU 8-7(5).

After the ITA Regionals conclude tomorrow, the Nittany Lions will return home to University Park to prepare for the Hokie Invite, in Blacksburg, Va., which runs from October 28-30.
