UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State men's golf finished alone in eighth place led by Charles Huntzinger's championship performance at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Jonesborough, Tennessee.

Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.), a sophomore and reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year, shot a 3-under round of 69 to put him at minus-13 on the tournament. This was Huntzinger's second career win after securing his first at the Rutherford Intercollegiate last April and tied his career-low tournament score with 203.

"Charles was steady, patient, and took it to the golf course when it was there for the taking," said head coach Greg Nye. "This is one of better fields in college golf every year. A huge win for Charles!"

After a 4-under opening nine holes, Huntzinger was able to respond to a double bogey on the 10th hole with his second eagle of the tournament on the par 5, 517 yard 14th hole.

Junior Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) and freshman Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) both ended their tournaments with a 73 finishing at 2-over and 5-over, respectively. JD Hughes (Carlisle, Pa.) and Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) shot 77 and 79 to end the fall portion of their season.

Ryan Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.), playing as an individual, shot a 78 finishing at 5-over.

"Although we finished in the middle of a quality field we are far from feeling good about the weekend," said Nye. "We didn't take care of enough high percentage shots. This young team has talent but that alone does not carry the day. We need to grow in some key skill areas, as well as the mindset of finishing tournament rounds."

Virginia was able to hold onto its lead throughout the final round finishing at 35 strokes under par, 13 strokes ahead of second place Missouri. Kent State took third at minus-15.

A three-way tie followed Huntzinger on the leaderboard as Furman's Bryce Howell, East Tennessee State's Mateusz Gradecki and Virginia's Thomas Walsh all finished two strokes behind.

The Lions, with their fall schedule wrapped up, have a three month break before beginning play again in early February against West Virginia for the Athletics Director's Trophy in Kissimmee, Florida.
