Women's Tennis Wraps Up Matches At Penn Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; October 3, 2016 ââ'¬" The Penn State women's tennis team wrapped up competition in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sunday, Oct. 2. Freshman, Samantha Smith was victorious this weekend winning her flight.

The results from Sunday, Oct. 2 are as follows: Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Az.) fell to her opponent Caroline Lynch of Yale 6-3, 7-5. Dasha Sapogova (Belarus, Minsk) won against Amy Yang of Yale 6-1, 6-4. Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) dominated her singles match defeating Sherry Li of Yale 6-3,6-1. Liyin Xu (Chengdu, China) defeated Opala Dhingra of Yale 6-4, 6-4. Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) fell to Elizabeth Zordani of Yale 6-3, 1-6, 10-5. Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fl.) fell to Lea Winkler of DX 6-4, 1-6, (10-6). Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) beat Sunday Sweet of UD 6-0, 6-4.

Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) took on Olaya Inclan Solis of SJ defeating her 6-1, 2-0 Ret. Smith advanced to the final match in her flight. She beat Natalia Perry of W&M 6-1, 6-2, taking home her first fall tournament draw victory of her college career.

"Our team showed a lot of fight today on the final day of the tournament," said head coach Chris Cagle. I was very happy for Sammi Smith to pick up her first fall tournament draw victory of her college career. This tournament will prepare us well for Regionals in a few weeks."

Next up, the team will prepare for the ITA Regionals in Norfolk, Va., from October 14-16.
