COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Penn State women's soccer team defeated the Maryland Terrapins, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field. The Nittany Lions scored all three goals Sunday on corner kicks.
With the victory, Penn State improves to 9-2-3 overall and 5-0-2 in Big Ten play, while Maryland falls to 3-11-1 in 2016 and 1-6-0 in conference action. The win also extends Penn State's unbeaten streak to 10 games (8-0-2).
Brittany Basinger (Purcellville, Va.) and Nickolette Driesse (Wayne, N.J.) connected on a pair of corner kicks in the 13th minute and 60th minute, respectively. Penn State collected its third goal of the afternoon on Elizabeth Ball's (Richmond, Va.) second goal of the season in the 84th minute.
The No. 13 Nittany Lions scored their first goal of the game at 12:04 as Driesse swung the ball into the six-yard box to Basinger from the right corner area. With the ball heading towards the six-yard box, Basinger headed the ball towards the ground and into the back of the net for her first goal of 2016.
Basinger and Driesse then added to the Nittany Lion lead in the 60th minute on Basinger's second goal of the game, which is a career-best. From the left corner area, Driesse swung the ball into the six-yard box and then Basinger headed the ball into the goal from close range.
Ball extended the Nittany Lion lead to 3-0 at 83:35 with her second goal of the 2016 season. With the ball loose on the ground following a Nittany Lion corner kick, Ball connected on a shot from three yards out.
Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Dennis (San Diego, Calif.) made her lone save of the game during the 51st minute on Jlon Flippens. Rachel Egyed recorded eight saves for the Terrapins in the game.
The Penn State offense peppered the Terrapin defense with 21 shot attempts on the day, while the Nittany Lion defense held the Maryland offense to four shot attempts.
Heading into today's game, Maryland's Chelsea Jackson and Jarena Harmon combined for 17 goals on the year with nine and eight, respectively. The duo combined for two shot attempts Sunday, none of which were on goal.
The Nittany Lions return home for a pair of matches at Jeffrey Field against Rutgers (Oct. 13) and Purdue (Oct. 16). The match against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights will be aired live on the Big Ten Network at 7 p.m.
