UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) became the first Penn State player to register 100 career points as he helped the No. 12 Nittany Lions to a, 6-3, victory over Alaska-Anchorage in non-conference men's ice hockey action this evening from Pegula Ice Arena.
"He [Goodwin] has played with so many different people, and he just puts up points no matter who he plays with," commented Head Coach Guy Gadowsky. "I think it is just a huge testament to his hockey mind and how hard he battles."
PSU improves to 8-1-1 on the year while UAA drops to 1-8-0 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game started slow before Penn State grabbed three goals over a 4:35 span in the final seven minutes of the opening frame.
- Sophomore Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) cashed in on the doorstep during a power-play at 13:51 with help from junior Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) and Goodwin for the 1-0 lead.
- Just 24 ticks later freshman Kris Myllari (Kanata, Ont.) lit the lamp for the first time in his career with a wrister from the point that squeaked through a screen to tickle the twine at 14:15 for the 2-0 edge.
- The Lions stretched the margin to 3-0 as Berger collected his second goal of the night at 18:26 with help from sophomore Vince Pedrie (Rochester, Minn.) and Goodwin.
- Pedrie took advantage of a beautiful pass from freshman Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) during a power-play late in the second period to extend the lead to 4-0 at 19:48.
- The Seawolves wouldn't go away quietly as they came out in the third period to score three times as Jarrett Brown got Alaska on the board at 3:29 and Tad Kozun netted a pair at 10:00 and 19:49, respectively.
- Senior Ricky DeRosa (Aston, Pa.) potted his first of the campaign at 4:30 of the third period and Myllari added his second of the game at 15:42 to account for the final score.
GOALTENDING
Freshman Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) made 14 stops to improve to 7-0-1 on the year while Seawolf junior Olivier Mantha falls to 1-6-0 after a 39 save performance.
NOTES
- Goodwin became the first Nittany Lion to register 100 career points with his assist on the first goal of the night. His two assists give him 101 career points and 23 multi-point games.
- Trevor Hamilton has now registered at least one point in 9-of-10 games this season.
- Myllari becomes the sixth different freshman to score a goal this season as he finishes the game with a career-high three points on two goals and one assist.
- Freshman Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) was awarded a penalty shot at 8:58 of the second period, but was denied by Mantha.
- Smirnov extends his point streak to 10 games which is a new Penn State single-season record. He also recorded his fifth multi-point game of the season and third consecutive.

- Berger collected his third career two-goal game and sixth career multi-point affair, second of the season.
