Nittany Lions Compete In Day Two At Split Tournaments

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; November 5, 2016ââ'¬" The Nittany Lion women's tennis team continued competition on the court at split tournaments in North Carolina and New Hampshire.

The Big Green Invitational second day singles results vs. Missouri are as follows: Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Florida) lost to Brianna Lashway 7-6(4), 6-4. Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) fell to Cassidy Spearman 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Florida) lost to Amina Ismail 6-0, 6-0. Liyin Xu (Chengdu, China) fell to Clare Raley 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

"Each day we look to improve and in some areas we did that today," said assistant coach Mike Fenwick. "Going into the last day of the tournament we hope to be playing our best tennis of the weekend."

In doubles Zuhse/Dunn lost to Lashway/Ismail 7-5. Shukow/Xu fell to Spearman/Schroeder 7-6(1).

The four Nittany Lions at the Kitty Harrison Invitational competed against Duke in singles. Scholl defeated Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) 6-3, 6-1. Smith beat McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz) 6-2, 6-2. Samantha Smith of Penn State (Carey, N.C.) defeated Smaller 6-4, 7-5. Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) defeated Makarova 6-3,0-6, 1-0(6).

Head Coach Chris Cagle commented on the second day at the Kitty Harrison Invitational. "We talked about competing well today and we did that in many areas. Taking two singles from Duke was a good effort. We are looking forward to finishing off the tournament strong versus UNC Charlotte tomorrow morning."

Players at the Kitty Harrison Invitational took on University of Virginia in doubles. Mercer/Gullickson defeated Blik/McCluskey 8-3. Smith/Hanley were defeated by Favero/Johanson 8-5.

The Big Green Invitational and Kitty Harrison Invitational wrap up tomorrow, Saturday, November 6.
