UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Sophomore Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) registered his sixth career multi-goal game as the seventh ranked Penn State Nittany Lions defeated No. 20 Michigan, 6-1, in their B1G Conference opener this evening from Pegula Ice Arena.
The win improves the Nittany Lions record to 12-1-1 overall and 1-0-0-0 in conference action while stretching their nation's best winning streak and unbeaten streak to 10 and 12 games, respectively. The Wolverines falls to 6-6-1 on the year and 0-1-0-0 in B1G play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sturtz potted his 11th goal of the season punching home a loose puck in front of the crease as freshman Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) and senior Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alb.) notched assists on the play.
- Freshman Liam Folkes (Scarborough, Ont.) extended the lead in the second period as he took the puck away from a Michigan defenseman in the offensive zone and made a nifty move across the crease beating Wolverine senior net-minder Zach Nagelvoort with the back hand at 4:42 for the 2-0 margin.
- The Nittany Lions continued to build the lead as with time winding down during the man-advantage junior Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) lit the lamp for the power-play goal at 15:18 for the 3-0 lead.
- A pair of seniors then connected with under two minutes to play in the second frame as Zach Saar (Richland, Mich.) found Ricky DeRosa (Aston, Pa.) for the score at 18:22 for the 4-0 lead heading into the second intermission.
- Sturtz then tallied his second of the game on another rebound bid after a clean face-off win by Richard and an initial shot by Smirnov at 12:06 of the third period for the 5-0 lead.
- Michigan broke the shutout as Tony Calderone notched his team leading seventh tally of the season just 30 seconds later for the 5-1 score.
- Junior Erik Autio (Espoo, Finland) then potted his first of the campaign at 16:00 of the final stanza to account for the 6-1 score.
GOALTENDING
- Freshman Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) stood tall all night making crucial saves to improve to 10-0-1 on the year after a 28 save evening.
- Nagelvoort absorbed the loss to fall to 2-2-0 after stopping 25 pucks over the first two periods before being lifted for freshman Jack LaFontaine who made 17 saves during the third period.
NOTES
- This marks the third straight season Penn State has opened conference play with a victory.
- Smirnov has now registered at least one point in 13-of-14 games this season and has a three game point streak.
- This marks Smirnov's eighth multiple point game of the season as he is now tied for the national lead with 16 assists while his 25 points is just one behind Union's Mike Vecchione for the nation's top spot.
- Penn State snapped a 5-game losing streak to the Wolverines and improve to 4-2 all-time at Pegula Ice Arena when facing Michigan.
- Penn State played in front of its 63rd sellout in 65 contests at Pegula Ice Arena and have now sold out 48 consecutive games.
