UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa; February 28, 2016--The Penn State women's tennis team defeated Marshall today at home, sweeping the Herd 6-1. The win improves Penn State to 3-6 on the year.
In No. 1 singles Kim Surin (Montreal, Canada) defeated Derya Turhan 6-4, 6-4 and Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) was defeated by Rachael Morales 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles Devan McCluskey defeated Anna Pomyatinskaya 6-1,6-2. Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) defeated Maddie Silver 6-1,6-4 at No. 4 match. In No. 5 singles Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) downed Marija Bogicevic, 6-4 retirement (injury). In the No. 6 match Samantha Tutelman defeated Anne Gulsrud 6-1, 6-4.
Partners Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Kim Surin (Montreal, Canada) secured the doubles point for the team at No. 1 singles when they defeated Turhan and Morales 7-5. In the No. 2 match Zuhse and Whiteaway went unfinished against Pomyatinskaya and Silver 6-5. Penn Staters Blik and Tutelman clinched the doubles point at No. 3 doubles against Bogicevic and Gulsrud 6-1.
"I felt like the team played well across the board today," said coach Cagle, "Marshall is a program that during the three years of me being here we haven't beaten; they are a quality program every year. They have had a number of close matches against ranked team so for us to win today at 6-1 and play at the level we did I was pretty happy and it is going to springboard us into our spring break trip."
