UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Four players registered multiple points to help lift the No. 4 Penn State Nittany Lions past Michigan State University, 5-2, in Big Ten Conference action this evening from Pegula Ice Arena.
With the win the Nittany Lions improve to 15-2-1 on the season and 4-1-0 in the Big Ten while the Spartans fall to 4-14-1 overall and 0-5-0 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Michigan State opened the scoring early taking advantage of a power-play chance to score the game's first goal at 1:52 of the first period as Zach Osburn fired a wrister from the right dot over the glove of PSU freshman goaltender Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) for the 1-0 lead.
- The Nittany Lions responded with good offensive zone cycling as junior Erik Autio (Espoo, Finland) fired a shot from the right point which was deflected by senior David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) in the slot before it was batted out of the air by sophomore Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) on the doorstep for the goal and 1-1 tie at 5:53 of the period.
- Penn State then took the lead right before the extra attacker got on the ice during a delayed penalty as sophomore Vince Pedrie (Rochester, Minn.) fired a shot from the left point through a bunch of traffic out front that beat MSU net-minder Ed Minney high-glove at 16:42 for the 2-1 lead.
- The Lions extended their lead coming out of the first intermission as freshman Brett Murray (Bolton, Ontario) collected an assist in his first collegiate game as classmate Liam Folkes (Scarborough, Ontario) beat Minney with a no angle shot from the left side of the cage for the 3-1 lead at 3:30 of the middle frame.
- MSU cut the lead back down to one as Joe Cox skated in uncontested on a shorthanded bid and slipped the puck past the left pad of Jones with a nifty forehand-backhand-forehand move for the 3-2 score at 9:58 of the second period.
- PSU then dominated the final period as they have all year by scoring twice to ice the victory. Following an unsuccessful power-play it was Pedrie firing a shot from the right point and sophomore Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) slapping the rebound five-hole on Minney for the 4-2 lead at 4:22 of the frame. Goodwin would add an insurance goal at 13:48 for the final score.
GOALTENDING
Jones stopped 24 pucks to improve to 13-1-1 on the year, which ties Eamon McAdam for the single-season Penn State wins record for a goaltender. Minney falls to 4-10-1 on the season after a 41 save performance.
NOTES
- Tonight marked the 50th consecutive sellout at Pegula Ice Arena and the 6,152 fans is a season-high.
- Penn State wins their 11th consecutive home game.
- The Nittany Lions improve to 14-0-1 when leading after two periods of play and are now outscoring their opponents 28-14 in the third period after scoring twice tonight.
- Vince Pedrie moves within a single goal of tying Luke Juha '16 for the Penn State all-time record for goals by a defenseman after tallying his 14th career goal and sixth of the season in tonight's game.
- Pedrie, Goodwin and Berger each collected one goal and one assist while Autio notched a pair of helpers in the victory.
