UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; January 14, 2017-- The Penn State women's tennis team kicked off its spring portion of the season against Navy Saturday at the Indoor Tennis Center in University Park, Pa. The Lions shut-out Navy 7-0, picking up the doubles point with a doubles sweep and winning all six singles matches.
The singles results against Navy are as follows; Katia Blik defeated (Moscow, Russia) defeated Amanda Keller 6-1, 6-3. Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.) beat Claudia Mackenzie 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) won against Josie Rogers 6-4, 7-6. Dasha Sapogova (Belarus, Minsk) was victorious winning 6-3, 6-3. Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) beat Emily Louie-Meadors 7-5, 6-1. Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) defeated Catalina Rico 6-4, 6-1.
Three pairs of Nittany Lions competed in doubles. Blik/McCluskey defeated Catalina Rico and Aimee Dervishian 6-0. Zuhse/Dunn beat Claudia Mackenzie and Emily Louie-Meadors 6-3. Hanley/Smith took down Rozel Hernandez and Carlee Conway 6-2.
Head Coach Chris Cagle was pleased with the team's performance against Navy. "Navy is a well coached team that competes hard so I was happy to come away with the win today," Cagle said. "There are many parts of this match that we will need to take moving forward this spring season. I felt like we competed well and that is always an important aspect to college tennis. We will get back after it tomorrow to get ready for a tough VCU team next Saturday."
The Nittany Lions are back in action again next weekend at home when they take on Virginia Commonwealth on Jan. 21 at 11:00 a.m. and Sun, Jan. 22 at 11:00 a.m. against West Virginia.
