UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 1 nationally ranked Penn State men's ice hockey team welcomes No. 11 Ohio State to Pegula Ice Arena this weekend for a pair of Big Ten Conference clashes on Friday and Saturday evening.

THIS WEEK'S MATCHUP

  • Penn State welcomes No. 11 Ohio State to Pegula Ice Arena for a pair of match-ups to close out the season series.
  • Ohio State leads the all-time series with a 10-6-0 record while the teams have each won three games apiece at Pegula Ice Arena.

LAST TIME THEY MET

  • The two teams met just two weeks ago in Columbus as the Buckeyes bested the Nittany Lions 3-0 on Friday night before Penn State came back with a 4-2 victory on Saturday to split the series in Columbus.
  • The shutout was the first for Penn State since a 5-0 loss to Minnesota on March 13, 2015.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE #1

  • For the first time in program history Penn State received the #1 national ranking in the USCHO.com poll on Monday afternoon. They received a program-high 30 first-place votes.
  • The Nittany Lions are also ranked #1 in the PairWise entering the weekend.
  • Penn State leads the nation in offense averaging 47.89 shots per game (+11 over the next closest team) and 4.58 goals per game while controlling the dot with the best faceoff win percentage in the country of 56.5 percent.
  • The Lions' +49-goal differential also tops the nation by 20 goals while their 2.00 goals allowed per game is good for fourth in all of Division I.

CLASS ACT

  • Last week captain David Goodwin was announced as a nominee for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award. He becomes the third Penn State men's ice hockey player to be nominated for the award joining Luke Juha '16 and 2016's winner David Glen '16.
  • Earlier this season Goodwin became the first player in Penn State history to notch 100-career points. He now totals 109, which is good for ninth nationally while his 74 assists are fifth most among current NCAA players.
  • This season Goodwin is currently tied for second on the team with 19 points on a pair of goals and 17 assists.

THE BIG GADOWSKY

  • In his 17th season as an NCAA Division I ice hockey coach, Guy Gadowsky sits at 249 career victories with his next win marking the 250th of his career.
  • The Edmonton, Alberta native registered his first win as coach of the Alaska Nanooks on October 9, 1999, ironically enough also against Ohio State during a 5-1 victory. His 200th win came back on November 15, 2014, a 4-1 victory at No. 4 UMass-Lowell.
  • Gadowsky holds a 76-70-11 record as Bench Boss at Penn State including a 49-28-7 record since his 200th win against UML.

WELCOME TO GOOD BERGER

  • Sophomore Chase Berger is currently riding a three-game goal streak and was just named the Big Ten First Star of the Week on Tuesday. This was the fourth time a Nittany Lion has earned First Star accolades and the eighth weekly award overall for Penn State so far this season.
  • The sophomore has five points in his last three games (4G, 1A) including registering his fourth multi-goal game and second of the year during Saturday's 5-3 victory over Michigan State. His second goal of the game was also the game-winning tally. He now has 10 goals on the season good for third on the team and eighth in the Big Ten.
  • The St. Louis, Mo. native also has six power-play goals this season, which tie a Penn State single-season record and give him nine for his career to tie for second all-time in Penn State history only trailing the 13 of Casey Bailey.
  • Berger is also PSU's top face-off man winning 62 percent of his draws this season, which is good for 11th in the nation and tops in the Big Ten. He went 40-15 (72.7 percent) last weekend against Michigan State.

IN'VINCE'ABLE

  • Defenseman Vince Pedrie is on the verge of becoming one of the most decorated blue-liners in Penn State history... and he's only a sophomore.
  • In 51 career games, the Rochester, Minn. native has registered 39 points off 14 goals and 25 assists. His point total ranks one better than teammate Erik Autio for second all-time for points by a defenseman at Penn State. His 14 goals is also just one shy of Luke Juha's '16 single-season defenseman record.
  • Pedrie registered a pair of multi-point games with four points on one goal and three assists last weekend versus Michigan State.
  • His six goals leads all Big Ten defenseman while his 17 points is good for second in the conference among blue liners.

HAM IT UP

  • Junior defenseman Trevor Hamilton is tied for second on the team in scoring with 19 points after a three-point weekend against Michigan State.
  • Hamilton's 19 points leads all defensemen in the Big Ten while his 16 assists now tie the Penn State single-season record for defenseman assists and are tops in the Big Ten.

THIRD PERIOD TEAM

  • While Penn State has rarely trailed all season let alone facing a deficit after two periods of play, they seem the flick a switch in the third period.
  • Facing just their third deficit at the end of the second period on Saturday, the Nittany Lions scored four third period goals en route to a 5-3 victory over Michigan State.
  • Penn State is now out scoring their opponents 32-15 (+17) over the final 20 minutes of play. PSU is also unbeaten when leading after two periods at 14-0-1.

GOALTENDER U

  • Penn State has always had strong goaltending since their inception into the Division I ranks. PJ Musico, Eamon McAdam and Matt Skoff are all playing somewhere at the next level and now Peyton Jones is the guy.
  • With his 14th win of the season on Saturday, Jones set a new Penn State single-season record for victories with 14 surpassing the 13 wins McAdam had last season.
  • Jones' 2.04 goals against average ranks tenth in the nation and tops in the Big ten while his .918 save percentage is good for top-20 nationally and second in the Big Ten.

PENN STATE FEATURED ON TOP PLAYS

  • Last weekend's series against Michigan State saw a lot of fancy goals and two stood out above the rest.
  • Denis Smirnov used a nifty backhand goal to land a spot on SportsCenter's Top-10 plays on Saturday night while Liam Folkes' no angle, game-winning tally from Friday night came in at #3 on this week's edition of the "Nice From The Ice" on NCAA Ice Hockey Top Plays.

SATURDAY NIGHT'S ALRIGHT (FOR HOCKEY)

  • Penn State is currently 6-0-0 in Saturday night affairs this season proving that Saturday Night truly is alright, especially for playing hockey.

FRIDAY NIGHT WHITES

  • Friday night marks our annual "Wear White" game as all fans coming are encouraged to wear white.
  • Penn State is 1-2 all-time in such games at Pegula Ice Arena with their only win coming two seasons ago during a 5-2 triumph over Wisconsin on February 6, 2015.

RECAPPING MICHIGAN STATE

  • Penn State outscored the Spartans 10-5 over the weekend including a 6-1 margin in the third period.
  • Berger and Pedrie led the way with four points each while Trevor Hamilton and David Goodwin each added three.
  • Michigan State opened the scoring each night, but Penn State showed they could overcome adversity with come from behind victories each night.
  • Penn State has now won 12 straight home contests and with their sixth series victory of the season they have set yet another single-season record. Their 13 home wins on the year also tie the single-season record set during the 2015-16 season.
  • The Nittany Lions have also won the last six games against the Spartans.

SCOUTING OHIO STATE

  • Ohio State enters the weekend ranked No. 11 in the USCHO.com poll after beating and tying Arizona State last weekend.
  • The Buckeyes have lost just once on the road this season and currently have a 7-1-2 record away from Value City Arena including a victory against now No. 2 Denver to open the season.
  • Ohio State has the nation's second best offense, behind Penn State, as they average 4.20 goals per game scoring 84 in 20 games. However, they rank more toward the middle of the pack on defense as they allow 2.75 goals per game, which is tied for 26th.
  • The Bucks do have the third most potent power-play unit converting at 25.6 percent (22-for-86) on the season while their PK has struggled at just 76.1 percent (70-for-92) placing them 54th out of 60 teams.
  • OSU will be without their senior captain and leading scorer Nick Schilkey who suffered an injury on Saturday against Arizona State. Schilkey currently lead the Big Ten in goals with 17.

NEXT TIME OUT

  • Penn State travels to the Wells Fargo Center for the fifth annual Philadelphia College Hockey Face-off and will battle Princeton on Saturday January 28th at 7 p.m.
  • The Nittany Lions are 3-1-0 all-time at this event outscoring their opponents 14-9. They have scored four goals in each victory.
