CHARLESTON, WV - No. 15 Penn State (11-6, 6-2) downed EIVA foe Charleston (WV) in straight sets 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-16) Saturday night at the Wehrle Athletic Arena.
Penn State was led by a balanced attack as seven different Nittany Lions recorded kills on the night with three totaling six or more.
Lee Smith finished the night with a team high nine kills on 16 attempts hitting .562 for the match.
Penn State finished the match with four Nittany Lions hitting better than a .400 clip including Luke Braswell who also led the team in assist with 27 over three sets.
Braswell also contributed six digs on the defensive side of things.
The opening set saw Penn State score first on a Charleston service error, but the Golden Eagles kept the match close as the teams played essentially point for point to a 15-15 tie before Penn State was able to run away with set.
In the second set with Penn State leading 10-5 off a Lee Smith kill, the Nittany Lions went on a 10-5 run to find themselves leading 20-10 over Charleston (WV).
Penn State finished the set on a 5-3 run taking set two 25-13 and leading 2-0 heading into the break.
Penn State trailed for the first and only point during the match as a Nittany Lion attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. Penn State quickly erased that deficit and easily won the set by a score of 25-16 that included three-straight service aces from Jalen Penrose who had a match high four on the night.
Penn State returns home to host the Penn State Spring Break Tournament as UC-Santa Barbara and Stanford travel to the east coast to take on the Nittany Lions Mar. 3-4 in Rec Hall with both matches slated for 7:30 p.m.
