DETROIT, Mich. - Four different Nittany Lions found the back of the net as No. 15 Penn State defeated Michigan, 4-1, in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals this evening from Joe Louis Arena.
Penn State improves to 22-11-2 on the year while the Wolverines see their season come to an end at 13-19-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State opened the scoring with a power-play tally as freshman Brandon Biro (Sherwood Park, Alberta) skated behind the Michigan net and fed classmate Liam Folkes (Scarborough, Ontario) on the left side of the crease for the 1-0 lead at 10:50.
- The Nittany Lions extended the lead as freshman Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) skated through the right slot and fed a backhand pass across ice to find classmate Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) for the backdoor tap-in at 13:24 for the 2-0 lead.
- Sophomore Alec Marsh (Bridgewater, N.J.) then broke into the offensive zone along the far side half wall and fed the puck to senior David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.) in the right slot and the captain picked the far side beating Wolverine net-minder Zach Nagelvoort to the blocker side for the 3-0 lead at 19:31 of the opening period.
- Sophomore Vince Pedrie (Rochester, Minn.) wasted little time in the second period pushing the Penn State lead to 4-0 as he let loose a one-timer from the left point right off the faceoff to become the most prolific scoring defenseman in Penn State history with his 16th career tally at 1:03 of the middle frame.
- James Sanchez got Michigan on the board with a power play tally at 10:19 of the second period for the 4-1 score.
GOALTENDING
Freshman Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) improves to 20-9-2 on the year after making 30 saves in the victory while Nagelvoort falls to 6-6-1 after stopping 30 shots in the defeat.
NOTES
- Penn State was 1-for-2 with the man-advantage and held the 34-31 edge in shots on goal while Michigan went 1-for-3 on the power play.
- PSU's 22 wins are now a new single-season program record as they surpass the 21 they achieved last season.
- Penn State broke their single-season record of 140 goals set last season as they now have 141 on the season. The Nittany Lions also set a new single-season points record of 377 surpassing the 366 points registered during the 2015-16 campaign.
- Smirnov tied the Penn State single-season assists record of 27 set last season by Goodwin with his first period helper on Sucese's goal.
- After scoring his 16th career goal, Pedrie passes Luke Juha '16 on the Penn State all-time list for most career goals by a defenseman.
- Penn State improves to 3-3 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament and advance to the semifinals for the third time in four seasons.
- PSU improves to 19-3-2 on the year when leading after two periods and 20-2-0 when scoring four or more goals. The Nittany Lions are also now 18-0-0 when allowing two goals or less this season.
NEXT UP
Penn State now moves on to Friday night's semifinals against top-seeded Minnesota at 8 p.m. This marks the first-ever post-season matchup between the two teams.
