Gibson Captures Penn Relays Title on Day Two

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.
- The Nittany Lions added another name to the list of Penn Relays champions from Penn State as Dannielle Gibson captured the Championship section of the women's triple jump on day two of the 123rd Penn Relays from Franklin Field.

Dannielle Gibson captured the event with a jump of 43'-6" (13.26m) that she achieved on her first jump of the competition. Gibson won the event by over four inches and is the first Nittany Lion woman to win a triple jump title at the Penn Relays in program history. Gibson is the first women's individual champion since Elizabeth Chikotas won the 5,000-meters in 2015.

Kaitlyn Lopez, also competing in the triple jump with Gibson, finished sixth with a mark of 40'-10.25" (12.45m).

In the men's Championship of American Sprint Medley Relay, Xavier Smith, Malik Moffett, Dan Chisena and Isaiah Harris combined to finish second running a time of 3:17.40 seconds that falls three tenths of a second (.30) off the school record pace. The relay won the opening heat by over a second ahead of Clemson (3:18.74) before G.C. Foster captured the event title in 3:16.15 the very next heat.

Patrick Anderson set a new personal best in the men's pole vault as the senior from Kane, Pa. had a best bar of 16'-2.75" (4.95m) that was good for third-place. Anderson passed on the opening height of 14'-5.25" (4.40m) before clearing 14'-11" (4.55m) and 15'-5" (4.70m) on his third and second attempts at the heights, respectively, followed by clearances on the first attempts at his final two bars of 15'-11" (4.85m) and 16'-2.75" (4.95m).

In the women's 4x100-meter relay, the group of Quenee Dale, Keianna Albury, Kiara Lester and Tichina Rhodes finished sixth in 44.78 - a new season best - in the same heat as Oregon who set a Penn Relays and Franklin Field record with their time 42.35, besting LSU's 2008 mark of 42.59. The men's sprint relay of Karson Kowalchuk, Dan Chisena, Xavier Smith and Malik Moffett ran 39.82 finishing second in their heat and fifth -overall qualifying for tomorrow's final set for 1:40 p.m.

Moving up to the men's 4x200-meter relay, Karson Kowalchuk, Moffett, Anton Porter and Tyreek Mathis pieced together a race of 1:25.08 that won their heat and finished fifth-overall qualifying them through to tomorrow's final. The women's 4x200-meter relay of Quenee Dale, Keianna Albury, Kiara Lester and Madeline Holmberg ran 1:35.36 finishing second in their heat and fourth-overall to qualify for tomorrow's final as well.

The men's 4x400-meter of Chisena, Smith, Mathis and Sam Reiser posted a time of 3:08.09 and will compete for the event title tomorrow in the finals slated for a 6 p.m. start.

Kayla Zoscgh recorded a top-10 finish in the women's javelin throw with her mark of 136'-1" (41.50m) that she posted on her third throw of the competition.

David Marrington, who got things started for Penn State on day two, ran a season best and new collegiate personal best of 53.91 in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles topping his previous best mark of 54.21.

Other performances on day two for Penn State include: Kelsey Vieira (37'-3"/11.35m) and Olivia Giambra (36'-11.75"/11.27m) in the triple jump, Jon Yohman (153'-5"/46.77m)(58'-0.5"/17.69m) in the discus and shot put, Morgan Shigo in the shot put (51-10/15.80m), Devin Bradham (6'-6.75"/2.00m) in the high jump as well as the men's DMR (9:42.91) and the women's SMR (3:56.43).

Penn State will close out the 123rd Penn Relays tomorrow with the first Nittany Lion slated to compete at 9 a.m. ET.
