UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Sophomore Madison Carter's (Davidsonville, Md.) career-high eight points and 12 draw controls helped lead fourth-seeded Penn State past James Madison, 19-14, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament this afternoon from the Penn State Lacrosse Field.
Penn State improves to 16-3 on the year and advance to next weekend's NCAA Quarterfinals to face No. 5 seed Princeton on Sunday. The game will be played in University Park with a time to be announced later. JMU concludes its 2017 campaign with a 14-7 overall record.
Carter tied her career-high with six goals to lead all scorers while junior Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) added four scores and freshman Maria Auth (Street, Md.) netted her second career hat trick in the victory. Senior Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) registered five points on a pair of goals and three assists while sophomore Kayla Brisolari (Crofton, Md.) added two goals and two assists for a career-high four points.
In a game of runs, Penn State opened the contest on an 8-1 spurt through the first 15 minutes of action. Brisolari potted the first two scores of the game while Carter secured her hat trick in just 9:08 of game action scoring three times during the run.
JMU closed out the first half on a 5-1 run of their own, which ballooned into a 8-1 run over the first three minutes of the second half resulting in a tie score of 9-9 at the 25:49 mark. Seven different Dukes scored during the run led by a pair from Elena Romesburg.
The Lions responded as O'Donnell fired home a pair and Carter followed with two more before Auth capped a 5-0 run, which gave the hosts the 14-9 edge with 16:35 remaining in the contest.
The momentum swings continued as JMU scored the next three goals, but O'Donnell once again came up with a clutch score at 10:25 for the 15-12 lead. JMU cut the deficit back down to two goals on a pair of occasions, but the Lions won going away as they finished the game on a 3-0 run. Auth, Carter and Lazo were the goal scorers.
Senior Cat Rainone improved to 15-3 on the season in cage after stopping eight shots while her counterpart, Emily Poelma, fell to 14-7 after a 12-save performance.
NOTES
- The Nittany Lions advance to their third consecutive NCAA quarterfinal and eighth in program history.
- Penn State improves to 22-20 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 2-0 against JMU. PSU is also now 9-3 at home in the NCAA Tournament including a perfect 4-0 record at the Penn State Lacrosse Field.
- Penn State secured a season-high 12 assists on its 19 goals as five different players registered multiple helpers on the afternoon. Carter (2), Brisolari (2), Smucker (2), Gallagher (2), Lazo (3). The Lions are now just 10 assists shy of setting a new single-season team assists record. The current record is 127 and was set in 1983.
- PSU's 19 goals are the second most they have scored in an NCAA Tournament game and the most since a 23-7 first-round victory over West Chester in 1999.
- Penn State outshot the visitors 36-30 including a 31-22 clip on target. The Lions also led in draw controls (18-17) and ground balls (19-13) while going 18-for-20 on the clear.
- With her five points, Lazo moves into seventh on the Penn State all-time scoring list with 209 points passing Colleen O'Hara.
- O'Donnell also passes O'Hara on the all-time goals list after her four-goal performance she moves into 12th with 135 career goals just two goals outside the top-10.
- With 31 points as a team today, Penn State set a new single-season points record of 397 points breaking the previous record of 396 set in 1986.
- The Lions are also just two goals shy of breaking their single-season goals record of 280, which was also set in 1986 and equaled in 2015. Penn State currently sits at 279 goals on the season.
