SPARKS, Md. - Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) earned the IWLCA Senior All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award on Saturday as her North squad, coached by Missy Doherty, secured a convincing 16-11 victory over the South squad.
In a comfortable setting with Doherty on the sideline and in her home state of Maryland, Lazo registered a game-high five points and three assists while also scoring a pair of goals in the victory. Her three helpers were more than the entire South squad, which combined for just two assists all game.
Lazo, an IWLCA First-Team All-American, picked up right where she left off at Penn State as the senior registered 11 games this season with five or more points while averaging 4.24 points and 2.05 assists per game to lead the Big Ten and rank 28th in the nation in both categories.
Lazo's 89 points in 2017 rank as the ninth highest single-season total in program history and were the most since 1989. Her 43 assists also tie Maggie McCormick '15 for the second most in a single-season behind Megan Smith's program record of 51 from 1990.
The Big Ten Attack Player of the Year finished her career seventh on both the all-time points list and assists list with 211 and 89, respectively. She is just the 13th player in program history to register 200 or more points.
Penn State finished the season 17-4 tying its second highest win total in program history and most since 1989. The Nittany Lions advanced to their second-consecutive NCAA National Semifinal and their 11th overall in 2017 before falling to eventual National Champion Maryland.
