UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) named its Scholar All-America selections on Wednesday evening, with Penn State alum Nick Aponte one of 55 players named to the 2017 class.
Aponte is Penn State's 10th Scholar All-American and the fifth under head coach Jeff Tambroni's tenure. The 2017 captain was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
On the field, Aponte was a two-time consensus First Team All-Big Ten performer, capping off a stellar final season with 24 goals and 33 assists for 57 points, tied for 10th most in a single season in program history. The USILA All-America honorable mention finished his Penn State tenure with 140 career points on 70 goals and 70 assists, ranking the 11th most by a Penn State player all-time. His 70 career assists rank eighth most in program history.
The USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities. The USILA Selection Committee annually selects an overall team representing Division I, II and III.
A Scholar All-American must be nominated by his coach and be a student with a senior year academic standing and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale). The USILA also requires that all nominees have behaved in a manner that has brought credit to himself, his institution, and to college lacrosse both on and off the field.
Aponte helped guide Penn State to a program record-tying 12 wins and the fourth-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2017.
