BUDAPEST, Hungary - Penn State swimming and diving alum Shane Ryan placed 12th in the 100-meter backstroke Monday at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Swimming for Ireland, Ryan advanced out of the morning preliminaries to the semifinals, where he placed sixth in his heat with a time of 53.94 seconds to place 12th overall, improving four places from his 16th-place finish at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. The time was 0.18 seconds shy of earning a finals berth.
Ryan has two more races at the World Championships, as he's slated to swim the 50m back Saturday and the 400m Medley Relay Sunday. He is the second of two Penn Staters to compete at this year's World Championships, as current Penn State junior Hector Garcia Boissier (Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) narrowly missed the finals of the men's 3-meter synchronized dive Saturday, July 15, as he and his brother Nicolas totaled 372.30 points to place 13th for their native Spain, missing out on the finals by 2.10 points.
