Some familiar events are on the fall 2017 schedule for the Nittany Lion men's golf team, as announced by Penn State head coach Greg Nye.
"We are very fortunate this fall to be playing in four of the very finest events in college golf each year," said Nye, who enters his 26th season of coaching at Penn State. "These events naturally attract the best fields and we look forward to the challenges."
Penn State opens the fall portion of its schedule with a trip Sunday-Monday, Sept. 10-11 to the Gopher Invitational, hosted by Minnesota at the Windsong Farm Golf Course in Independence, Minn. The Nittany Lions competed last in this event in 2013 and the 2017 field includes defending NCAA team champion Oklahoma.
The following weekend, Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 16-17, Penn State travels for its third-straight year to the Rod Myers Invitational in Durham, N.C. In October 2010, host institution Duke renamed its annual fall event the "Rod Myers Invitational" to honor the legendary Blue Devils Golf Coach who passed away in 2007 following a battle with an acute form of leukemia.
The Nittany Lions return to the Windon Memorial at the Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Ill., for the Sunday-Monday, October 8-9 competition. Penn State has participated in this event three times previously and will play on the Evanston Golf course for only the second time in this year's 2017 event.
For the sixth time, the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate and host East Tennessee State welcome the Nittany Lions to the Friday-Sunday, October 13-15, event at the Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough, Tenn. Two top-five individual finishes and helped Penn State capture first place in the 2015 tournament. In Penn State's appearance in the 2016 event, Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) won the individual title.
In spring 2017, Penn State made its 23rd NCAA Championship regional appearance and finished fifth in the Washington Regional after being seeded No. 9 in the regional. The Nittany Lions advanced to the NCAA Championships finals for the fifth time under Nye. Seeded No. 30 entering the NCAA finals, Penn State vaulted past four teams during the third round to finish in a tie for 24th place.
All five of Penn State's NCAA Championship participants are slated to return for the 2017-18 season, four of whom have at least two more years of eligibility.
