PENNINGTON, N.J. - Three former Penn State women's lacrosse student-athletes were selected last night in the inaugural Women's Professional Lacrosse League (WPLL) draft. Recent graduate Steph Lazo '17 joined 2016 grads Ally Heavens and Madison Cyr as part of the inaugural draft class.
The WPLL is comprised of five teams, the Baltimore Brave, New England Command, New York Fight, Philadelphia Fire and the Upstate Pride, and is set to launch in the summer of 2018.
Lazo, who will play for the Command, finished her Penn State career seventh on the all-time scoring list with 211 points on 122 goals and 89 assists and was named an IWLCA First-Team All-American last season.
Cyr was selected by the Fight after finishing her career right behind Lazo tied for 10th on the Penn State all-time scoring list with 202 points while her 156 goals rank fourth all-time in Nittany Lion history. Cyr was a two-time IWLCA All-American earning third-team accolades in 2014 and second-team in 2016.
Heavens will join Lazo on the command after being one of the most consistent midfielders throughout her career as a Nittany Lion as she played in 81 games scoring 38 goals and adding ten assists for 48 points while collecting 81 ground balls, 89 draws and caused 60 turnovers including 26 during her senior season in 2016.
The WPLL is said to be a league "for players, by players" and is committed to both advancing the sport of lacrosse through providing professional opportunities for women in the sport of lacrosse in addition to providing each player with an athlete-first approach in terms of league scheduling, management and advancement.
