WTN: Nittany Lions Complete Day One of Seahawk National Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-The Penn State women's tennis team wrapped up its opening matches at the Seahawk National Invitational. Competition continues through October 1, 2017.

Ines Milosevic (Burlington, Ontario) and Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S Wales, Australia) both competed for the first time in their Nittany Lion careers on day one of the invitational.

Six of the Nittany Lions competed in singles on day one. Milosevic fell to Anna Rasmussen of VCU 7-5, 6-4. O'Gorman fell to Melissa Ifidzhen of VCU 6-1, 2-6, 10-6. Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) won against Noumea Witmus 6-4, 3-6, 12-10. Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) fell to Aida Kelic of Winthrop 1-6, 6-4, 1-0(10). Samantha Smith retired with an injury against Ellie Burns of Winthrop. Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.) also retired with an injury against Alya Mourad of Winthrop. Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) and Hanna Wikberg (Stockholm, Sweden) did not compete in singles.

All eight players that traveled competed in doubles. Dunn/Hanley defeated Straume/Barisano of UNCW 7-6(5). Milosevic/O'Gorman won against Fougner/Matute of UNCW 6-4. Wikberg/Svarre defeated Horn/Marthinsen of UNCW 6-2. Milosevic/O'Gorman fell to Olivarez/Veasova of ODU 6-1. Hanley/Dunn defeated McLelland/Rajkovic of ODU 6-2. Shukow/Smith lost to Roustan/Nicoara of Campbell University 6-4.

"We saw some areas where our team did really well today including our doubles play against UNCW," said head coach Chris Cagle. "In singles we had our opportunities and did some good things, but we need to do a little better at closing out on our opportunities. We have been improving in our singles play and we need to keep that trend going tomorrow and finish a bit better."

The Nittany Lions are in action again tomorrow at the Seahawk National Invitational.
