PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Sophomore Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals, but it was not enough as No. 4 Penn State fell to Princeton, 5-4, this evening in non-conference action as part of the fifth-annual Philadelphia College Hockey Faceoff at the Wells Fargo Center.

The loss drops the Nittany Lions to 16-4-2 on the year while the Tigers improve to 8-11-2 with the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sturtz opened the scoring early as he skated down the right slot and cut to the left finishing with a nifty backhand into the upper left corner of the net just 51 seconds into the opening period for the 1-0 lead.
  • Princeton responded with the equalizer, as Max Becker was able to beat Nittany Lion freshman Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) low blocker with a wrist shot from the right slot for the 1-1 score at 1:25 of the first period.
  • David Hallisey then registered a power-play tally for the Tigers before Penn State scored twice in a three-minute span to grab the 3-2 lead.
  • Senior David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.) lit the lamp with the man-advantage on a beautiful wrister from below the right dot at 10:46 before freshman Kris Myllari (Kanata, Ontario) found the back of the net on a wrist shot from the right point at 13:42 for the lead heading into the first intermission.
  • Sturtz then added his second of the game at 14:52 of the second period as he banged home a rebound for the 4-2 lead.
  • The Tigers then scored twice in a 1:20 span early in the third period as Liam Grande found the back of the net at 2:48 before Hallisey scored his second of the game on the power-play at 4:08 for the 4-4 tie.
  • Princeton then capitalized on a weird bounce of the glass that Jones thought went out of play, however, Ryan Siiro through the puck into the slot from the half wall and Ben Foster tipped it over Jones' shoulder for the 5-4 lead with just 1:26 remaining in the game.

GOALTENDING

Jones secured a new career-high with 36 saves, but falls to 14-3-2 on the season while Princeton net-minder Colton Phinney improves to 7-11-2 after stopping 43 pucks.

NOTES

  • Penn State outshot the Tigers 47-41. The 41 shots are the most given up by the Nittany Lions this season.
  • PSU was 1-for-3 with the man-advantage while Princeton went 2-for-4 on the power-play.
  • The loss is the first for Penn State when leading after two periods as they fall to 14-1-2 in such games and have allowed back-to-back three goal third periods.
  • The three-goal first period for the Nittany Lions marks the tenth time this season they have scored at least three goals in a single period.
  • Berger extends his career-best point streak to six games (four goals, six assists) and has had multi-point games in four of those contests.
  • Junior Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) set a new single-season defenseman assist record with his 17th of the season in the first period. The previous record was set by Luke Juha's '16 during the 2015-16 season.
