WTN: Nittany Lion's Complete Day One of Regional Tournament

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA-- The Penn State women's tennis team finished up day one at the ITA Regional Tournament in Blacksburg, Va. The team will continue play tomorrow October 14 through October 17.

Hanna Wikberg (Stockholm, Sweden) and Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) both played in the qualifying round on day one.

Wikberg picked up a win against Kiana Marshall of the University of Richmond 6-1, 6-4. She then fell to Natalia Perry of William and Mary 6-3, 6-3. O'Gorman was the No. 4 ranked seed in qualifying and started off with a win against Marina Alcaide of VCU 6-0, 6-3. O'Gorman then lost to Louie McLelland of ODU 6-2, 6-3.

Doubles play also got started on day one with Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Wikberg defeating Marshall/Giffenig of the University of Richmond 8-7(4). Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) and Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Maryland) lost to Varon/Bartolome of the University of Pittsburgh 8-2. Ines Milosevic (Burlington, Ontario) and O'Gorman are the No. 9 seeded doubles team and had a bye on day one of doubles play.

"Today was an up and down day in many respects," said head coach Chris Cagle. "We are creating opportunities which is a good thing but we need to convert at a higher rate. I look forward to seeing us do that tomorrow."

Play continues tomorrow for Svarre/Wikberg and Milosevic/O'Gorman. The singles main draw also begins tomorrow with Milosevic, Hanley, and Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) all seeing action on the court.
