UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State fencing team finished the Olympic Trials today. The Penn State saber team stood out as the competition came to a close.
The men's saber team began action on Sunday. The team was led by senior Andrew Mackiewicz (Westwood, Mass.), the captain of the men's team, who finished undefeated in first. Junior Karol Metryka (Linden, N.J.) was tied for third and junior Gavin Turner (Rehoboth, Mass.) placed 50th. Although he is not a Nittany Lion anymore, the 2014 Penn State national champion, Kaito Streets, finished second in men's saber.
The women's epee team finished its two-day run this morning. Sophomore Barbara VanBenthuysen (Spring, Texas) finished 53rd and Junior Alissa Hofmann (Cambridge, Mass.) finshed 78th.
Men's foil closed out the event for the Penn State fencers. Sophomore Andrey Ostatnigrosh (Fresno, Calif.) finished 25th, freshman Shane Iverson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) finished 35th and junior Julian Fevry (St. Albans, N.Y.) finished 69th.
