CANTON, N.Y. - Sophomore Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) collected one goal and a pair of assists to help lead tenth-ranked Penn State past St. Lawrence, 4-1, in non-conference men's ice hockey action this evening from Appleton Arena.

The win moves the Nittany Lions to 1-1-0 on the year and the Skating Saints fall to 0-2-0 after the opening weekend of play for each team.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Penn State opened the scoring at 9:33 of the first period as sophomore Kris Myllari (Kanata, Ontario) received a nice feed from freshman Alex Limoges (Winchester, Va.) and snapped a quick wrist shot past the glove of Skating Saints goaltender Arthur Brey for the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Liam Folkes (Scarborough, Ontario) picked up the second assist on the goal.
  • The Nittany Lions extended the lead early in the second period as junior Kevin Kerr (Bensalem, Pa.) lifted a dump pass out of the defensive zone and sophomore Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) skated to it all alone in the defensive zone and cut across the crease from left to right slipping the puck five-hole for the 2-0 edge at 3:37.
  • PSU continued the pressure and Folkes was able to find the back of the net from the slot off a great feed from Smirnov for the 3-0 lead at 14:15 of the second. Kerr collected the secondary assist on that play after he had a pair of scoring chances from the point.
  • Lawrence ended the shutout bid late in the third period as with just four seconds remaining on the man-advantage Alex Gilmour tipped a centering pass over the left shoulder of sophomore goaltender Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) for the 3-1 score at 12:45.
  • The Nittany Lions sealed the game late in the third period after St. Lawrence opted for the empty net, senior Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) rimmed the puck out of the defensive zone sending Smirnov on an odd-man rush with sophomore Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) who hit the net for the 4-1 final at 18:57 of the final frame.

GOALTENDING

Jones improves to 1-1-0 on the year after stopping 30 shots while Brey falls to 0-2-0 after a 31 save performance.

  • Penn State evens the all-time series with St. Lawrence 2-2-1.
  • The Nittany Lions were able to kill off an extended 5-on-3 power-play in the second period of over one minute.
  • Four Nittany Lions record multi-point efforts while Limoges secures his first career point.
  • Smirnov and Folkes secure their first multi-point efforts this season and the 14th and 3rd of their careers, respectively.
