MADISON, Wis. - Senior David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.) scored a pair of goals to help lift tenth-ranked Penn State past No. 17 Wisconsin, 6-2, and give Guy Gadowsky his 250th career victory this evening in Big Ten Conference action at the Kohl Center.
The win snaps a five-game winless streak for the Nittany Lions, their longest since the 2013-14 season, as they improve to 17-6-2 on the year and 6-4-1 in Big Ten play while the Badgers fall to 15-9-1 overall and 8-3-0 in conference action and their five-game winning-streak is snapped in the process.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 6:50 of the first period as Goodwin received a pass from sophomore Kevin Kerr (Bensalem, Pa.) and skated below the right dot and fired a wrist shot that went off the far post and in for the 1-0 lead.
- Freshman Brandon Biro (Sherwood Park, Alb.) extended the Lion lead to 2-0 as he was left alone out front and received a great pass from classmate Nikita Pavlychev (Yaroslavl, Russia) and beat Badger freshman goaltender Jack Berry glove side at 9:04 of the opening frame.
- Wisconsin got on the board in the second period taking advantage of a neutral ice turnover and odd-man rush as Seamus Malone was able to beat Nittany Lion freshman net-minder Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) blocker side to cut the deficit in half at 6:14.
- Just 62 seconds later the Badgers took advantage of a power-play chance and tied the score 2-2 as Luke Kunin received a great pass on the left side of the crease and found the back of the net at 7:16 of the period.
- PSU responded as freshman Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) created a chance by throwing the puck off the end boards from center ice where Goodwin raced it down getting a shot on net and Smirnov cleaned up the rebound slipping the puck five-hole for the 3-2 lead at 8:06 of the second period.
- The Nittany Lions grabbed the two-goal advantage once again as freshman Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) won the draw clean from the left of Berry and Goodwin fired a one-timer glove side for the 4-2 lead at 13:46.
- Penn State extended that lead to 5-2 just 56 ticks into the third period as junior Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) registered the sixth short-handed tally of the season for the Lions with great individual efforts from Sucese and Biro to make it happen.
- The Badgers attempted a late comeback as Jake Linhart collected a power-play goal at 16:21 of the third period, but senior Zach Saar (Richland, Mich.) found the empty net at 18:35 for the 6-3 final.
GOALTENDING
Jones stopped 30 pucks to improve to 15-4-2 on the year while Berry drops to 7-5-1 after making 26 saves.
NOTES
- Coach Guy Gadowsky secured his 250th career win (77 at Penn State) with the victory this evening.
- Goodwin set a new Penn State record for skaters by playing in his 133-career game passing Tommy Olczyk '16.
- Goodwin extends his point-streak to five games. This also marked his first multi-goal game of the season and third in his career and his 25th multi-point game of his career.
- Biro ties his career-high with two points as he does that for the third time this season while Sucese collects his fifth multi-point game this season.
- Penn State improves to 11-0-0 on the year when scoring at least five goals in a single-game.
- Wisconsin held the slim 33-31 advantage in shots and went 2-for-4 on the power-play while Penn State was 1-for-3 with the man-advantage.
