MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The sixth ranked Penn State men's ice hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to No. 7 Minnesota this evening in Big Ten action from Mariucci Arena.

Penn State falls to 16-5-2 overall and 5-3-1-0 in the Big Ten while the Golden Gophers improve to 16-7-2 on the year and 7-3-0-0 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Minnesota opened the scoring late in the first period as Vinni Lettieri fired home a backhander at 17:22 for the 1-0 lead.
  • Rem Pitlick extended the Gophers lead early in the second period, taking advantage of a weird bounce off the end board; he flicked a backhander from just outside the crease over the outstretched glove of Nittany Lion sophomore goaltender Chris Funkey (Orland Park, Ill.).
  • Pitlick then ripped home a rebound at 4:33 of the second period for the 3-0 lead.
  • Junior Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) then got Penn State on the board with help from senior David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.) and Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) at 8:42 of the middle frame as he fired a wrister from just above the right dot for the 3-1 score.
  • In the waning moments of the second period, Justin Kloos and Tyler Sheehy played a little tic-tac-toe with Sheehy finishing for the 4-1 score at 19:55.
  • Mike Szmatula added a late power-play goal to account for the 5-1 final.

GOALTENDING

Funkey stopped a career-high 25 shots, but falls to 2-2-0 on the season with the loss while Minnesota net-minder Eric Schierhorn improves to 16-7-2 after making 28 saves.

NOTES

  • Penn State was held to their fewest shot total all season (29) and in a single period as they fired just six shots on net during the opening period.
  • The Nittany Lions were outshot for just the second time all season and are now 0-1-1 in such games.
  • This was Funkey's third career start in net and his first start in a Big Ten Conference game.
  • Sophomore Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) had his career-best six-game point streak snapped while Goodwin and Sturtz improve their point-streaks to three games. Freshman Kris Myllari (Kanata, Ont.) also saw his career-high three-game point streak snapped in the loss.

NEXT UP

The two teams return tomorrow evening to finish out the weekend series with a primetime game on BTN at 8:00 p.m. EST.
