UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.--The Penn State women's tennis team triumphed over Towson 4-3 in the season home opener. The team went 3-3 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.
Starting off strong in doubles, Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) and Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) defeated A.J. Gomer and Renate van Oorschodt 6-4. Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) dominated Barbora Vasilkova and Nicole Shakhnazarova 6-1. Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) fell to Lucy Williams and Yevgeniya Shusterman 6-3.
The Nittany Lions battled it out in singles going 3-3. Rohrbacher clinched the match win with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 win against Alexa Martinez.
O'Gorman fell in a tight three sets to Nicole Shakhnazarova 6-2, 3-6, 7-6. Shannon Hanley fell to Lucy Williams 6-4, 6-2. Svarre battled back to win against A.J. Gomer 6-0, 4-6, 6-4. Dunn handled Yevgeniya Shusterman in an easy 6-0, 6-3 win. Taylor Shukow fell to Lucy Gloninger 6-0, 6-1.
"Tonight's match was another close one, another 4-3 win to start off the year," said head coach Chris Cagle. "If you look at the scores, a lot of the matches we were in control of and then we lost a few close ones. Credit to Towson, I felt like they competed really well. There are some things we did well, but once again, we are going to be looking to build off of this. I know we will continue to get better."
The Nittany Lions return to the Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday, Jan. 28 to take on Temple at 2:00 p.m.
