UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.-- The Penn State women's tennis team triumphed over a short-handed Temple team, 4-0. Penn State started up 2-0 after Temple did not have enough players for two of the six singles matches.
The team won the doubles point and the third doubles match was not played due to Temple not having enough healthy players. Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) and Shannon Hanley were beating Monet Stuckey-Willis and Alice Patch 5-3 when play ended. Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) and Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) won out against Yana Khon and Kristina Titova 6-3, to secure the doubles point.
Only four singles matches took place on the day, with three of them going unfinished after Svarre clinched the match with her singles win. Svarre defeated Titova 6-3, 6-1. O'Gorman was in a heated battle with Stuckey-Willis and was up 7-6 when play halted. Hanley was finding her groove against Patch after dropping the first set ending with a 1-6, 4-0 score. Rohrbacher was beating Khon 6-3, 4-1 when play ended.
"Today's match was a little bit different with Temple having a few players out with injuries or illness," said head coach Chris Cagle. "But, right from the start I'll give Temple credit, I thought the players they did bring competed hard down the line. It was good for us to get a match in and that's really what I wanted, another match repetition. We need that going forward into Friday's match with Columbia. They are a good team, we have a lot of respect for them. Looking forward to seeing where we stand on Friday."
The Nittany Lions are off to a perfect start on the season with a 3-0 overall record. The team will be back at home next Friday, Feb. 2 at 4:00 p.m against Columbia.
