UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's tennis team took on Memphis today in the first of two matches on a travel weekend, falling 4-1. Despite close matches, the Lions weren't able to win out singles.
Constant De La Bassetiere (Reims, France) and Christian Lakoseljac (King City, Ontario) faced off against Andrew Watson and Ryan Peniston but the Nittany Lion duo was defeated 6-3. Alp Sentay (Izmar, Turkey) and Christos Antonopoulos (Athens, Greece) battled it out against Kai Lemke and Matt Story ultimately losing 6-3. Matt Galush (Cary, N.C.) and Gabriel Nemeth's (Brasilia, Brazil) match went unfinished against Felix Rauch and Jan Pallares, the pair was up 5-4 at the end of play.
The team battled hard in singles, but fell to Memphis 1-3, with two matches going unfinished. Antonopoulos was the lone win of the day outmatching Chris Patzanovsky 6-3, 6-3. No. 67 De La Bassetiere hung with No. 61 Peniston but ultimately fell, 7-5, 7-5. Lakoseljac put up a tough two sets against Watson but couldn't hang on and was defeated 6-3, 6-3. Sentay fell to Lemke 6-2, 6-3.
Nemeth did not finish the match with Rauch; the score was 7-5, 5-6 when play ended. Ben Lieb also did not finish his match against Pallares, the score was 6-3, 2-6, 2-5 at the conclusion of play.
"Memphis was coming off strong wins against Cornell, Arkansas and Indiana so we knew it was going to be a battle," said associate head coach Paul Tobin. "The match scores were much closer than the overall score. We had many opportunities to close out games and just came up short. Great job to Christos for our single win and a huge effort by Gabriel and Constant."
The Nittany Lions are now 3-3 on the season. Next up for the Lions is a match tomorrow Sunday, Feb. 11 against Cornell at 1:00 p.m.
